Funkiest Bass Riffs?

…is actually a Herbie Hancock Gem!
Check out this whole album of absolutely killer soundtrack jams.
Makes me wanna see the movie.
I love this era of jazz/soul/funk.

And I’ll nominate one of my personal favs:

Any Meters would work, but this one’s a personal fav.

Ooh! Ok - only 2 more.
Brick. Disco funk and usually way more on the disco side, but check out this absolute crushing jam:

Here’s another cut from the same era - the bonus here is the bass solo. Oh, also that the bassist is named Fudge.

The task as posed is impossible.
But I applaud the efforts, and - at the very least - we now have the official Funkiest Thread on This Forum right here.
Love it.

Were does funk start or end??

Herbie being mentioned made me think of this - quite funky too: (but perhaps not as funky as Nathan East’s 'stache):

I new NWA sampled that from somewhere, and always meant to figure out where. Now I know. What a great bass line. Outstanding.

Great choices, so hard to pick. What about some Joe Dart and Vulfpeck? Deantown is a killer groove.

Probably an odd choice, but I think this bass line is funky as hell: Tool - The Pot

The Meters kill.

Always loved the Neville Brothers and went to every one of their concerts within 100 light years of wherever I was at the time.

But when I stumbled upon the Meters playing a stage at the New Orleans Jazz Festival back in the day, their funk wasn’t just hot; it was lava.

How about Mr. Calvin Klein and the Funky Bunch?
Good Vibrations has a funky bass line.

Does this count as funk? Probably not. Oh well, I just want this song to be mentioned somewhere in the forums:

Anything played by Bernard Edwards will by definition be funky. So, here is an unusually simple four bar bassline.

@JoshFossgreen : Truely an almost unforgivable crime. But it’s fine if you make amends wearing one of jamiroquai silly hat on your next video. (considering your crime, I’m being merciful)

Apart from that, I wouldn’t know how to pick the funkiest basslines, but maybe we could look into …

… and Larry Graham (and Graham Central Station), and Bootsy Collins, and … well, I will stop there since once I start, I have a really hard time to stop ranting about funk ^^´
