That beauty belongs to @John_E !! I am rather envious though if that counts. Hahahaha. I’ll have one some day. A 4004C will magically appear for sale or trade within my budget or leverage and it will be me mine. But not yet.
I’m getting it today \o/ It’s fun shoving my amp into a gig bag pocket for the first time XD it went into the main pocket so easily
well it needs a little TLC. I knew one of the input jacks was busted-ish from the pics (it has a Speakon and twin 1/4" “full range parallel inputs” and the left 1/4" is missing the nut)
The bummer is the Speakon jack doesn’t work at all, which I should have guessed when I noticed he had it hooked up with a Speakon to 1/4" cable it worked that way, it got loud, sounded good with distortion and clean, and it can growl like a motherfucker on that low B if I want it to
These cabs are something special I think. I read about them and fell in love; they’re light builds with thin plywood and bracing, with ceramic speakers they tried to kinda voice between old school and modern clean. The guy that designed them at Genz Benz before Fender bought them is still on TalkBass going by the name Aged Horse.
Ugh, as I typed this Alexa notified me that the fret end file I ordered is delayed. GFDI Amazon. They can’t really blame Covid for this anymore, not after like two years, can they? Sigh… I was really looking forward to fixing my C-5’s fret sprout tonight =/ The worst is, I haven’t paid attention to the tracking all day, and it’s middle of the afternoon, and the alert sounds the same as a delivery notification (or any other) lol. I got all excited…
The tweeter didn’t try to melt my f’ing face off either, which was nice. The Carvin tweeter is absolutely and utterly shrill AF at times. I basically had the L-pad turned off completely and backed off the treble on the bass or amp. That tweeter is angry and you will hear the song of its people. Or the crossover is just that badly shot
I’m taking off the sketchy as hell casters before posting pics. Someone in this cab’s 10 year life ham-fisted some chonky casters onto it and the screws go straight through the thin plywood; you can see it on the front casters. I’ll have to seal the holes for the rear casters… I plan to put it on an appliance/furniture dolly/cart
Replacing that Speakon jack is like $20 because I’m mainly finding them in packs of 4. I’ll keep looking for singles… the Speakon to 1/4" cables were not cheap and I prefer Speakon anyway.
I’m starting to think the jack and control plate on the back is glued on to seal it or something; I removed the screws and it still won’t come off XD (yeah I’m having to pry and it looks like there’s adhesive… fucking hell )
Alexa is the
I opened it up and what in the name of our Christian God is this fucking hell?
RE: Speakon not working - “Well there’s your problem” lol, the red wire became disconnected from the 1/4" jack that was busted. That’s an easy fix, at least. But what the hell was the top part of the tweeter switch connected to that appears to not even be there anymore where that mess of hot glue and peeled/torn away hopes and dreams were on the top right?
I’m thinking that, too, because the tweeter switch is a simple On/Off/-6db
I’m hoping Aged Horse from TalkBass/BassChat can shed some light on what value to put there.
Makes sense why the tweeter wasn’t tearing my face off when it’s been completely disconnected from the circuit I even used the switch and just kinda passed it by/didn’t notice anything amiss as I liked the sound anyway. I may not even worry about it.
yeah so the resistor made the -6dB attenuation.
but, in my opinion, tweeters usually sound best when disconnected
I honestly don’t have any complaints with the sound It sounds super thicc when I fed it lots of power.
Edit Apparently he can’t provide documentation on the crossover, but for $65 shipped I can buy a new one. Oof. He did say “Someone got into that crossover and butchered it” XD
The weird question is why remove the resistor at all? There’s easier ways to disconnect the tweeter. For example, the switch
I can’t even. It literally has an off-switch lol. The guy from Genz Benz asked more questions about the hack-job and did verify it’s the correct speakers. The seller hasn’t responded to my question of “are you the original owner?” because if he is, then he knew gd well what he had done and didn’t disclose it.
it’s a bit weird but not very important IMO. you can repair the crossover, or remove the tweeter neatly, or leave it as is. both would work.
when I owned my Ampeg BA115 HPT, the amp with the most reliability issues on Earth, one of the first failure has been the tweeter. I just removed it with the crossover, and made wooden panels to close the gaps neatly. problem solved. I never missed this tweeter.
A guitar, but… I think it would look good with my other purple ESP
Edit It’s a 25.5" scale I like the 27" on my SC-607 too much. Pass… I’ll just admire it from afar… Damn you, Brian Welch, damn you lol
That’s the normal Fender scale length. Gibson (and clones) are even shorter
I’m aware. 25.5" and 24.75" respectively. My point is I like the 27" on a 7-string to make the lower string sound better The first 7-string I ever played was 25.5". Same reason I now prefer 35" on 5-string basses, though The Beast is 34" and the low B isn’t what I would call problematic.
Mr. Welch started on Ibanez Universes which were also 25.5" so he likes what he likes.
Ah! I missed it was a 7.
Having… pedal… envy…
Gas has struck for the final time he says. Mostly because all my needs are met. The cull whill shortly commence.
Streams are no longer availible, but I love the Charvels. So I bought a second one today, my Dark Queen
What I love about these basses are the DiMarzios to start, the Split P and Model J that it comes with are very close in sound to the Duncan SPB3 Quarter Pounders in sound. Beautiful. It has a fantastic speed neck, about the depth of an Ibanez, with a compound radius 12" to 16". 38MM Tusq nut, toasted maple (lightly) with a satin finish and rolled frets, and a truss wheel Fender did this right.
With the exception of the EQ which is lackluster.
Already having the Split P and Model J, I am swapping out those pickups (and I already have them sold) for a DiMarzio Sixties P for the neck and Area J for the bridge.
Add to that I am replacing said meh EQ with a Darkglass Tone Capsule. This will be my main bass going forward. Fender did this right, the neck is sublime.
And my Mike D’Antonio MDB5 got pushed again, predictably.
Crazy looking body, the Destroyer shape is a classic Ibanez body. The MDB series has more ergonomic shaping to make it comfortable. You never see an MDB3 or MDB4, the previous two incarnations, on Reverb. I’ve been looking. So it must be doing something right.
It comes with an SPB1 Split Coil, and an SJB2 Jazz. I am replacing the SPB1 with an SPB4 Steve Harris pickup, and a set of Steve Harris strings.
I will be posting my old basses soon; a Surveyor 4, a LTD B204 and possible LTD B206. I will have my Harley, two Charvels, and MDB5. I won’t need anything else, but the streams will go last, if at all.
Harley btw sounds great with the EB92 Tapewounds, matched with the Relentless split coil. I’ve gone back to my Ampeg Rocket Bass 50w amp from my Rumble 100. Too many things in the house rattled with the Rumble. Of course when I last played the Rocket I wasn’t using hot pickups like the Charvel, and I may have woken the neighbors last night when I plugged it in. It boomed. I’m sure no one else has done such a thing.
Deng that’s
