According to the guy that built mine, the Fender Quarter Pounder is a custom shop pickup that is hot enough that he had to adjust the pickup height down. He also said it was pretty much hum free. I cannot wait to get home and put this bad boy through its paces. I have a set of D’Addario Chrome Flats I was going to put on it but he told me he just put a set of Ken Smith’s on before he brought it to me and to give them a fair shot. He said they have a growl and midrange thump that sounds good with that pickup.
Hey @PamPurrs … Want me to pick this up for you?

Thought you’d like the rose… And SX is respectable.
No thanks, but thank you for thinking of me
Literally the best basscessory I own. Worth every penny.
I played it a little. The sound is huge. The controls actually do something besides muffle the sound. A little adjustment to technique required because of pickup placement but floating thumb works great. It is around 7 lbs so really light. Gotta dial intonation on D string a touch but it may be my number one. I thought it would be kinda a one trick pony but adjustments in tone bring up all kinds of sounds
@Mike_NL suggested I head over here when I made an off-hand comment about gear acquisition, so hear it goes:
After about a year and a half of learning on a gifted Squier Bronco, I decided to shop for an upgrade in June. I lucked into a used ( 2 1/2 months old!) but mint condition Nordstrand Audio Acinonyx with matching gig bag. The bag still had the tags on it! Not even three months after that, I picked up a Kala Ubass because, I needed it! It’s a necessity because I travel for work and it can be carried on a plane
The Ubass purchase led to a search for a more portable amp solution. A couple of my friends and I drag our gear to some outdoor parks and bring power inverters so we can run amps, etc. But, my best friend and I were looking for something even more portable for the beach when the two of us just want to play acoustics. And so, I somehow bought a Phil Jones Bass Double Four and carry bag. And then a laptop power bank to run it so we don’t have to deal with a much larger inverter. I have a problem, I know!
The aforementioned best friend has been whispering in my ear about pedals for months now and there were some great Labor Day sales, so I ordered a Fender Downtown Express as my first foray into beginner pedal-land. And I might have purchased a Bass Big Muff Pi today.
No avoiding that I have GAS when it’s written down in black and white like this. I need a 12-step program!!!
We’re not likely to help with that. We’re better with 3 step programs
- Buy a bass
- Buy gear
- Repeat
Admitting you have a problem is the first step. Luckily you purchased the Fender Downtown Express before making your first step, so you will have that before going dry. You may want to wait until you get your next bass before taking recovery seriously.
Do you need a program or do you need to know about some great deals on pedals?
I just happen to know Sweetwater is selling the Aguilar TLC compressor and Aguilar Octamizer for $99 each.
That’s a deal good enough to have broken at least five people earlier in this thread.
GAS is good.
GAS is great.
GAS makes my heart palpate.
We are the worst at talking people into NOT buying gear. I’ve bought so much in the last year it is almost embarrassing given my beginner ass player status. I may not be that good yet but I have some nice stuff.
I played the new bass for quite a while. Damn, it plays and sounds really good. With the Tone Library and Boss GT-1B I was able to dial in a tone that works for 90% of the music I am playing at the moment. I set it up to my preference although the seller had given it a decent setup before he delivered it. The True Custom Shop pickup is really, really good. Who knew that such a small pickup could be so full of wonderful tones just by a simple twist of a knob. It is also really light. The lightest I have. Just a touch over 7 lbs by my bathroom scale. I like it!
Light basses are the best. Nice!
The pickup is amazing. Better than anything on my other basses. Using the GT-1B, I can make it sound like a thuddy P, a farty Jazz or a growly Ray. Just by using the eq in the processor. I had to adjust to floating thumb because it is so small but that was easy.
What’s that big space on the floor? Recently sold a Fender Princeton Reverb Amp and a Fender Super Champ Amp (guitar amps as who wants to play guitar right!)
Fender Rumble 500 or something else? Hmmmm
An SVT and 4x12 would really tie the room together…
Looks like an upright would fit there, right @PamPurrs ?
I’m with @howard on this, makes any room look better.
That’s the rug’s job.
I’m also beginner level, so I feel you with the ridiculousness of all the gear at this stage. That said, other than a Rumble 40 I bought for my first practice amp, I didn’t buy anything for quite awhile. I wanted to make sure this was something I was going to stick with long-term. Now that I’m a lifer, let the GAS begin!
You will be broke a lot.
