Well, the GAS syndrome with bass hasn’t hit me and it’s not likely to. I have a 21 year old Squier P and, now I’m a born again noob, I wanted a jazz bass for some balance.

When I was a little boy my mum always kept a Christmas present back for me until the evening to stretch the magic out a bit longer. I’ve adopted the same practice with my wife and now she does it with me, except this year she went one better. We had our Christmas three days late this year (my wife was away in Dubai at work) and we did presents in the morning, as usual. We gave each other an extra present that evening when I came home from walking the dog. An hour later when I came out of the bathroom, there was a long cardboard box with ‘Fender’ printed on it, propped up against a wardrobe. She bought me the three colour sunburst jazz bass that I’ve been jonesing for. That’s my bass collection sorted, job done.

I had a feeling something was going on when my mum gave me a two-bass floor stand and a new shoulder strap as Christmas presents earlier in the day.

I am failing miserably at the restraint thing. More stuff on the way. LOL .
At least I did all my buying before 12:00am on 1/1 . I have been good today

I need to put a parental lock on gear purchasing sites. Time to stop looking and spend that time playing!

Did someone say Pi-Bass ? Part of my recent GAS problem!

Ah right. I’m aware of Mayonnaise but my wallet won’t let me look at their website.

It looks fantastic.

Ask your wife’s purse instead?
Pro tip - do this when wife is not around.

Hmmm. Honestly with my current skill set I’m comfortable spending money in and around the Mexican Fender price range. Not cheap, not stupid money.

Having a lovely $4000 bass won’t improve my timing. However I do appreciate the craftsmanship from those companies. Maybe in a few years #screenshot

Yours skills are way above MIM price range there buddy!

Yeah. MIJ are better and MIA are even better, but MIM are still really, really good instruments. Good money spent in Fender MIM, for sure.

MIM - owned one, did not like it better than my Squiers (upgraded of course) - I did upgrade my MIM as well but never loved the neck or fretboard on the MIM Vintera series P.
MIJ - own 8, in love with all of them, esp the Marcus Miller Signature - blows me away
MIA - own one Custom Shop P - its fantastic, but not 3-4x fantastic-er than MIJs

But - what @Barney has done with his basses is just awesome. They look and sound great!

Squier and Sterling are definitely for everyday gigs. MIMs sounds about the same but carry the F batch for a little more street creds.
MIA are not for gigs unless you know that there’ll be a lot of Bassos around then bring a shinny one out. They also sound about the same, lol.

Mia usually offer a couple extra features not found on the others like string through body, compound fingerboard, micro tilt adjustments and special eye catching colors unless you are really crazy about black or white.

MIJs are the on a different league altogether well made, some are quirky and fun and they are also sound about the same.

If you only need a good sounding bass get the cheapest Squier. You want a solid bass all around with brand name batch get MIM. When you can find a great deal on Mia and/or mij and still have the itch then go for it.

You’d not be missing any special tone out of any of the more expensive series than Squier, if you feel it’s lacking you’d just change pickups and hardwares.

exactly what you say, @John_E . Fender MIM are more or less identical in quality to the higher Squier range (Classic Vibe / Vintage Modified were even a bit better in my opinion ; I own both, so I can compare).
Fender MIJ are great, you can’t get anything better for the price in the Fender range.
… but despite what have been told, MIJ has never been as good (even in the 70’s and 80’s) as MIA. just talking about raw quality, not quality/price ratio where MIJ are way better. But the best Fender are and have always been the MIA. But that’s an expensive choice.

The one thing that might separate MIM from Squier is that Squier necks are known to be a bit of a gamble on quality and longevity over time. Not sure I’ve ever heard that about MIM. That’s not to say you can’t land a Squier with a super neck, just means that there are some duds out there.

I found it on their site, it’s gorgeous and the HF is an obvious great choice for you. Very nice.

For the cost of an MIM, I would order from Japan and get an MIJ Fender or Fujigen. Price to your door is about the same and quality so much better.
