GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 1)

Actually yes, a Fender MIJ is better than a MIM for more or less the same price tag. a MIJ is just in between a MIM and a MIA in quality, in my opinion, which is great already. really great.

The perk of MIJ in general is the funky models they have and incredible colors in many models. Their reissued model are just above and beyond as well.

They are, aren’t they?!?

Well, this is the GAS thread after all (where things have or have not yet happened)… more will be revealed in due time in the “show us your bass” thread

Yes, I totally understand and can relate. I earned some extra cash in Nov that I put forward to this bass. Trying to keep those expenses totally separate from our “normal” budget…

Yes, there have been lots of discussions in this forum alone on whether a 4000 dollar bass serves you better than a 400 dollar bass. The answer is totally subjective and personal. But, don’t let your (perceived) skill level dictate that alone

I think it is! I have been circling around this bass ever since I got its sibling two years ago. It really has my name written all over it

Here is what the owners themselves say about that name (plucked from TalkBass):

"The name of the company comes back from early 80s.
Just before the brand was fully legally formed, the owners of the company had a friend and co-worker nicknamed ‘Mayonnaise’ - simply because added Mayonnaise onto virtually everything he ate.

When they decided to legalize the company that was the name they set on with just a different spelling.

So in the end it is a bit of an inside joke, which stuck for 40 years, as no-one could expect how much the company will grow internationally "

They made it easy for the English-speaking world. Mayones is the English phonetic spelling of “majonez” which is Polish for mayo (most commonly mispronounced by softening the z to an s).

First time I heard of them, I thought they were Spanish :joy:

I’ve asked for a quote on a custom build.

There are a lot of things about the HF I like a lot: it’s built around a Jabba body (which I’m used to) as well as their amazing proprietary preamp and bridge.

In fact, the only thing I will change is the neck. The HF’s nut width (just a tad wider than my Mala) is good to go, but I much prefer a 9.5” fretboard radius rather than the 20” Hadrien likes. He’s a killer player, but not with my hand. Lol

I am also asking about a P/MM pup config. What the hell, if I’m gonna GAS, I might as well floor it. :racing_car:

And make it heavy on the Mayo.

Wow, cool! Go for it!!

That fretboard on my PJ is perfect for me; and the JJ is supposed to have the same (of course).

Neat! Maybe you could have it with a similar solution as Sandberg has for MM-types: have a switch to use either one row of coils (like a J) or both (like a MusicMan)!?

And, never skimp on the Mayo

In essence, what I’m asking about is a current Jabba Mala config, but as a 4-string instead of 5-, and with a Natural Satin finish like your new one.

The purple color of the current Mala 5 model doesn’t do it for me, but the pups do.

That is some nice GAS

Ah, I have to confess I had never looked more closely at the specs of the Malaman model. It does indeed already feature a coil split option.

So, if I got that right, you want the 2-tone sunburst from the HF PJ?
Should all be doable, as they all share the basic Jabba body type

No, not quite. I’d like the Natural Satin finish, like on your new HF J/J.

Ah, OK - got confused there.

I think of it as brown oil finish (Mayones calls it antique brown finish).

When I read “satin” I really think of how it appears - matte vs. lacquered/polished

OK, then, you want a Malaman in a Feraud skin

Correct. :+1:

I just heard from Mayones that the 9.5” radius neck is only available on Mala models, which is fine with me. Switching from playing one to the next will be seamless.

It’s really the 4-string config, P/MM pups, and antique brown finish I’m after.

I presume it’s an aesthetic decision but that body is what happens when you don’t use a wood conditioner prior to staining. You get uneven dark patches as the stain soaks into the more porous part of the wood. It’s wood staining 101.

Wood-Conditioner

Yep, that is what I would guess, mostly because I would assume these guys know what they are doing (but then, you never know).

Bacchus has a somewhat similar finish for their Woodline series, but they have apparently chosen to apply (some) conditioner first:

Mayonnaise is my single most favorite food there is (Hellman’s brand). FYI. Lol

This is not why one buys a $4000 bass or most other high end collectible instruments. They buy them because they exist… …and they want them.

Go to Holland, they love that stuff.
