GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 1)

My local bass guy is tempting me again. Check out this build! I am in a buying mood as evidenced by my recent posts and I love the simplicity of this guy’s builds. I already have two of his builds and know this one will be superb. My long suffering wife will surely kick my ass if I pull the trigger.

Looks great. Amazing price for a custom build. The fact that you already own two from the same builder and know the quality makes this a no brainer. I can’t wait to see more pictures after you receive it. :grinning:

I live close enough that he brings my bass to me and hangs around while I check them over. I have bought a Warmoth P/J from him and a Warmoth 54p (my number one) His builds are perfect and use great parts. They are also cheaper than any others on Reverb. Plus, he is a pretty cool old dude.

You couldn’t not possibly ask for a better situation to buy a bass. The one I am currently looking at has to come from Germany to the US. I would be buying it based on reviews, YouTube videos and reputation of the builder. The first time I would see it would be when I open the box.

You are a bad influence. Joe offered that body to me on a custom build but I went another direction. I would not be down this rabbit hole if it were not for @EddieJones

Is he building you one? Or, are you doing it yourself?

I can honestly say, I tried to source product to build me my own 51P. When I finished totaling everything up, my build was north of $1,000. I do not know how he does them at the price points he sells at. And as low as he prices them, he has given me a discount (small) on the last one.

Joe is building me one. Like you when I priced it out, he is cheaper than sourcing myself

Give us the deets man…what is the build going to be?

I even considered used parts and he was still several hundred cheaper. He also sets them up, does the fret work, etc…when you get it, you will be impressed. I have considered buying new in the last couple of days from SW, but I cannot justify spending more when Joe’s builds are so much better. My 54P blows every other bass I have out of the water (except his other build, the P/J I got from him)

The upside (if you ignore the cost) is the enjoyment of building your own bass from parts. That appeals to some of us. Not so much to others.

I should say mostly building me one. I am supplying my own pickup

A Nordstrand

I will have to install the pickup myself

Alder body, 54 shape which means it has the contours for the arm and belly. Not sure of the neck. Will be either Pau Fero on Walnut

Or Maple on Sapele

Nordstrand pickup, it’s what I know so far.

That walnut neck is the bomb. Damn, that thing is pretty!

It appeals to me to. I priced out Warmoth body and neck. However, not having a good run on health lately, decided to have Joe do it. I didn’t want it to drag out indefinitely

His builds are perfection. He must have an “in” with some of his suppliers to get them as cheap as he does.

That’s the one I want. There was a delay on the body, so I hope it’s still available.

By the time I had priced all the parts, it was twice what I could get Joe to build for me using the same parts. I don’t quite understand how he does them so cheap, but I can assure you, he does not skimp on the quality of parts. Even his electronics packages are high quality…pots, jacks and harnesses…

Ditto that :star_struck:

It will be the walnut. This will be a pretty nice bass. I have a Nordstrand for it, but thinking of taking the Fralin off the Squire and putting it on. Always a decision
