And then you need a Marshall stack to go with that amp right?
I did this and sold it - string spacing was uncomfortable, now waiting the new Marcus Miller (Z7-5) as that is very close to my J and P string spacing. Fortunately only available later, today “only” mic / stand and a few cables to arrive (and Saturday I’ll get my Yamaha Stagepas 300 back for the mic).
Bottom line: before GAS-ing a 5 string (or any instrument) at least test it (a very same type) to see if that’s for you.
Oh yes @Wombat-metal - I wish I had posted sooner! I started with a single 1Spot- went to a dual daisy chain- and before it arrived ordered the five count version!
Agree @faydout - I have a Fender PB- had to get a SansAmp to go with it.
I totally agree that going and trying is definitely the way to go. I much prefer physical stores over buying online, but sadly I have little options where I’m living. Thomann has proven invaluable to me though as they also have a 30 days money back guarantee. I am considering taking a trip to their store this year. It’s about 5 1/2 hours each way, so maybe a weekend stay would be an option.
Well, maybe check the advertisements for used gear - you may find someone with (similar-to-) targeted bass and can try, maybe even purchase much cheaper.
I have lost ~20% on the (otherwise awesome) Ibanez SR305 when learned the spacing is too narrow for me.
I feel 5 string basses are always cheaper 2nd hand. I always get a better deal on them used than 4s.
Before I bought my TRBX504 I was eyeing up a BB434 but decided I’d rather have the top end model than the middle one but couldn’t justify the cost at the time (£800+ new). I found the TRBX playable & versatile, but somehow I’ve never quite gelled with it and ended up doing (not finishing) the course on my Peavey Millenium BXP, and most recently re-running the course on the '63 Hofner Artist.
I ‘only’ have 3 basses at the moment, so it could be argued that I don’t have a GAS problem. I had 4 at one time so I’m still behind that curve.
Anyway, this has popped up nearby and it’s just what I’d hankered after a couple of years ago. It’s a good price which means I can sell my TRBX and only be £150 or so down on the bank balance. Plus, when (OK, if) I sell the Hofner I will be ahead of the money curve - it’s worth at least double what I’ve put into it. One could argue that the BB734A would effectively be FREE. I won’t use that argument with my wife, but as it’s my pension money that is being ‘borrowed’, I don’t think I need her permission.
Oh look, it’s a wood finish again… I do have a type.
Oh also, I was chatting with a guy about a Gibson Thunderbird this week. He’s looking for a swap with “something interesting” but my Hofner isn’t it. I don’t really want a T-bird again, but I liked the idea of having the Gibbo version to compare tot he Epiphone one I had. He’s not put a price on it so I’m not spending any more time into that chase.
BB734A is one of the best production basses you’ll find, IMO. I love mine.
This Yamaha BB (line) is one of my personal favs - to look at it and especially when (after finishing B2B and ended up at SBL for continuation) heard/seen Ian King (while doing first half of Stax/Motown course) play it then to own it. It has to wait but will definitely own one sometime.
Send help. I’m knee deep in the HX stomp manual looking at what’s included.
Personally, I would pick that BB anytime over a Thunderbird!
Even if not going against a Thunderbird, I would consider it very strongly; alas, I already own a nice PJ
I have a BB234 and despite having more expensive instruments I use that BB regularly. Just got some fresh strings on it and it’s a delight. I’m sure the 434 and 734A are even better.
You think?!
I want to get a Js3 Spectra in white but it only comes with gold hardware which in my opinion, is tacky af. Where can I buy just black hardware?
That statement is essentially damning with faint praise, @joergkutter.
Indubitably, old chap, I hadn’t expected otherwise
(well, at least until a certain PM makes its appearance!)
Very good things come to those who sit and wait.
Eventually.
Hopefully.
Does buying a second hand pedal count as GAS?
I’ve enjoyed the virtual phaser in GarageBand, so thought I’d try one in the real world. I’m a great believer in second hand (indeed, one of the things I like about the bass / guitar scene is the delight in the vintage), as it satisfies the need to acquire now kit, but limits the personal environmental cost, especially if you then sell on things you diner want! Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox . This phaser was less than half the new price and it’s mint - no scratches, dings or Velcro residue!
So…cool phaser sounds, here we come!
