GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

That’s like asking: so you really need so many basses?
It’s just a bass!
Some people have a Fender P bass and that’s it - why bother? Especially for a sh#tty YouTube upload.
Same for pedals, by the way. I own exactly 0. What about all those pedal fetishists here??!

Just playing Devil’s Advocate!

EDIT I forgot Amps! What about Amps???

I think that’s a rhetorical question

And you, who does all the modding, (and I), aren’t the best devil’s advocate lol

Hey you found my life coach.

You know I just realized I could have a bass YouTube channel, :joy:

How much have you recorded with an interface? I bet the bass fetishists play those basses more than you record.

Bass is here! Giving it a little time to warm up before opening. They have a sticker on the box saying to wait 24 hrs, but since it’s been in CA since Saturday, and in Sac all day yesterday, I think it won’t be a problem.

In the meantime, I swapped out the chrome Dunlops for the black finish and moved things around in my office for the new stand:

my fav bit of the promo:

Co-Developed with Fender® – Front-facing instrument inputs engineered for guitarists by industry-leading experts.

I choose to believe that Fenders only contribution to the project was to suggest the inputs be front facing

Yeah that “Co-Developed” thing is some hot bullshit right there

Fender doesn’t make their own jacks, much less someone else’s.

oooh in white!
Congrats, love love love mine.

I do both, lol.

My engineer side had to sort out what I like for settings in a setup, which are fairly universal and measured (cause that’s what I do) - HOWEVER - That is in fact my starting point. If I think I will be picking more on a bass, I change things a bit, but generally always the same, measured change. I track and save in a SS all my settings for each bass the way I like it and note if for picking or fingers. That way, I can always go back to what I like each bass to be set up as. As seasonal changes happen, I can feel it (or hear it) and tweak without measuring.

But all that measuring allowed me (at least) to understand what I liked, and why, and how to get back there.

Also interesting at times, when I set up a bass I just got to my ‘standard’, it tells me a lot about the bass. The condition of the neck, frets, bridge-ability (action lowering potential), etc. and I can also make notes on what’s uniquely a ‘characteristic’ (ie. flaw) in a bass and why I have to set it up differently.

Perhaps my inner guitar tech coming out that I really am not.
Or, perhaps i just thrive on data.

I am also a very scientific cook, and adored Alton Brown, who overanalyzed how anything should be made. This obsession also resulted in the single greatest chocolate chip cookie recipe of all times.

Whatever it takes to sleep at night…

The funny thing is, by education and early profession I was an Analytical Chemist, and am now a software engineer with a lot of focus on metrics and analysis

Or as my pastry chef trained daughter puts it, a baker. I’m more of a measure with your heart / no such thing as too much garlic or cheese kind of cook.

I bet that ANYBODY here that only plays bass, plays their bass more than they record. The other way around would be quite strange

I do play via DAI 100% of the time, does that count?

Sill, I don’t understand your reaction.

Is it about posting about an audio interface? Is it about PreSonus?

I be with you on the love for the Fender MMJB.
Its great and I really dig the pre amp…
Its also amazing how different it sounds than the Geddy jb in passive mode, and with the preamp its a distant world away.
I still love the Geddy but its going to be all Marcus for awhile… :jbass: :sunglasses:

Hahaha … I don’t expect anything more from Fender “engineers” … I hope they did not use 50s technology, like in all other Fender products

I saw a picture of the beta version of those inputs and am happy that they could miniaturize it! Is that Leo Fender himsel, btw?

Of course. I was just wondering: posting about a DAI = bad. Posting about anything else = good.
I still need to understand what (good) GAS is, I guess

When I was served on a Battleship, I worked on modern Firecontrol. The MK1A Firecontrol computer for Main Battery Firecontrol (16 inch Guns) looked like this but a little smaller. Gears, every where, gears!

Those have quite some output

When you play, you’re hearing it in real time. As someone that records somewhat often, I’ll tell you that it sounds way different most of the time between what you’re hearing and how it comes out. Obsessing about the quality of something that you aren’t really seeing a benefit from seems like a waste of time. If you recorded as often as someone like SunDog, I could see this rabbithole making sense. As it stands you just simply need something that gets sound from the ting in your hand to the computer. Set and forget like most of the rest of us basically.

I care about 100x more about the quality of the interface preamp than I do about esoteric features.

My audio interface is actually kind of an afterthought bolted in to my mixer because they need to have one to compete. And I am someone almost entirely hobby-focused on recording and producing music, much more than I am bass.

Quality? No quality? You are all confusing me

So, I should forget about the features I need and not care about audio quality? Is this the message?

Your use case is different, as you use synths and samplers.

Also, different use case! You use pedals, I use TonelIb Jam with Plugins or Studio Pro with Plugins.

It seems strange to me, not to try to get the best quality for the price you are willing to pay.
We are talking about a 274€ interface here. How much did you invest hardware that are not basses? Pedals? Amps? Etc?

Nobody questions here when somebody buys an expensive bass or even dozens of basses. It’s encouraged.
Same for pedals. Or amps. It’s the GAS section, is it not?
How many basses do you own now @faydout ? How many pedals? How many amps? And how many live performances have you done? Why all that stuff?

Getting things, especially as posted here - is all mostly about vanity, not about actual need. It’s GAS! Nothing wrong with it - everything that is not about food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter is GAS to some degree.

So what am I looking for in an interface?

  • If I record it should be the highest audio quality possible (within the limits of budget), same for listening in - and I use a good PA and even better head phones. Because: why not?
  • Latency is very important. If you go with your bass through pedals directly into your bass amp, you might not care. If your effects come from plugins, you do care a lot!
  • Mono out as a DAI feature is important, cause of a stupid Tonelib Jam limitation. I need to listen in via one side of the head phone.
  • And - since last weekend - controlling every feature of the DAI via a GUI on my PC is important.

In the end it feels like some modding discussions here. It’s ok and cool to buy an expensive Fender P-bass, cause Fender. But modding HB’s is crazy (ok, I admit, it is a little crazy :-))

Many discussion get very personal nowadays. From some people I expect nothing else - it’s in their nature. They are bullies!
But @faydout - I see you as a good and reflected guy. Is this really necessary?
(@howard - I also exclude you here, as you have helped me a lot, but I have said that before already).

While I 100% believe you are confused, please do not cherrypick from two different contexts to try and make a point

There’s that pesky word again

You don’t need any of these things. You have fixated on a specific way of doing things and are willing to sacrifice excellent gear options you have already purchased that are perfectly fine, just to support the workflow you have decided on.

I am not judging this, but let’s not pretend there is a need here. A little adaptation would go a long way.

I do indeed but how does that make my bass needs different?

You already have this with the SSL. You will not beat it in terms of recording quality without going to pro grade gear.

Again, not judging workflow or choices, but let us not bring “need” in to this.

Look, I am fine with your explorations as it mirrors my own, but all the same I am going to try and save you time and frustration.

At the same time you need to be able to see why we find this all amusing
