A friend’s father is a guitar player and he us selling his only bass. I know not much about the Fender Jazz Bass. The s/n does dot come up in the data bass. What can you guys tell me about this one? Thanks in advance!

Mexican Jazz Bass, entry level of Fender brand name, solid upgrade platform. Throw some Fralin’s in it and it will be great.
The Fender SN lookup is very lacking - try this one, btw 1996 made.

I’d start by looking at Reverb. Just to get a ballpark start on the price. Obviously they’re asking prices not what they sell for. But that data is available in there if you dig.
Mid 90’s MIM build quality is still a bit Hit or Miss. Check the frets and fret sprouts and especially the truss rod, try to adjust the relief both direction if it works and no frets issue, you are golden. Don’t worry about electronics, that’s cheap to replace. $500 is not so bad a bit on a high side. It’d be fantastic if it’s $400.

I think, if it came down to it, I’d offer 400 and go from there. My friend has mentioned it a while back, so maybe he wants to be shed of it! I do have a set of Seymore Duncan Jazz Quarter Pounders on the bench!

If you Gig at all, it’s a no brainer.
Some says,
MIM especially in that era were made by large number of players or musicians in their Ensenada Factory, when compared to the Corona Factory.
I also heard Phil Mcknight mentioned similar sentiment.

Since I see the subject to being discussed above, I’d like to ask some advice.
I have a bass that I want to sell, and I’m really not sure how to price it. They’re no longer made, and internet pricing is all over the map! And then, there’s also the fact that mine has been worked by a luthier, as well as having upgraded parts. So I really don’t know what to do. I’m thinking of just keeping the price low, where someone can get something extra nice, and I can just move on with my own GAS. But advice would be appreciated

If you explain that the bass is no longer being manufactured and your upgrades by a professional, you might hold out for a higher price if you are not in a rush. You kind of have something that might command more value that you will lose if you in a hurry to sell. Many musical items seem to have nice values in the used arena. Or like you said, do someone a favor.

Check on Reverb and if you can run a report for what the bass model has sold at for the past 6 mos/year, whatever the report does.
Generally, mods do not affect the value of a bass in my experience, and some models people want stock. You rarely get out of mods what you put in.

Oops, I did it again!
This time, and OLP MM2. It was as cheap as, and has the most odd knob set up - 2 x coil volume and 1 x tone, so you can increase the volume of each coil in the ‘humbucker’, independently of each other.
It is in great condition, plays really well and sounds surprisingly good for a bass that cost next to nothing.
For those that are not familiar with OLP, it stand for Officially Licensed Product. They built affordable, Music Man copies in the late 1990s / early-mid 2000s under license from Ernie Ball Music Man. This was before the Sterling brand was launched.
I’ve been in two minds regarding whether to keep the bass or flip it, but I’m leaning towards keeping it as a mod platform. A simple mod would be to reconfigure the pick-up wiring to series / parallel, with a push-pull knob. Alternately, I could fit a two band pre-amp, if I could squeeze the pre-amp and battery into the control cavity…
