GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

All videos y have seen and heard make me want it but every time I’m about to pull the trigger a little voice tells me that my sansamp programmable bass driver is enough for that “about to break up drive tone” I love on P-basses. Congrats!

Sorry! I have misbehaved. No mayor news on the GAS Front other than a set of SIT strings on sale which have not arrived. I have never used them before.

If you consider helping me to overcome this terrible lack of GAS please tell me which (not too expensive) drive/distortion pedal you would recommend to get a very soft similar sound to the one in the video (1:00-1:48). I got the Ashdown and returned it. In conjunction with my P-bass and Mustang it went from “nothing” to harsh distortion within just a few degrees of turn on the dial and I never got it to sound similarly. I get closer to that tone between my SansAmp programmable BDDI and gain on the Amp.
I trying to have a good GAS attitude… :joy:

Cheers!

Congrats on your (incoming) SIT Foundations. They are really fine strings. Here’s hoping you can get yours soon. :+1:

Thanks, @MikeC ! Me and my stories… I was about to get a set of regular EB Slinky’s when I found the SITs for the same price, that on Amazon. Afterwards a person at a music store told me to watch out for those EBs on super sale. According to him they are often fake and really bad. It honestly wouldn’t surprise me.

Thanks!
Question for you… Do you use Dingwall strings? If not, what do you use?

If I’m honest, I’m not 100% sure what’s on mine. I bought it pre-loved, but I don’t think it had been played much as it was / is in near perfect condition, so I suspect Dingwall strings.

They are of a pretty thin gauge, which I really like.

Yep, iirc it was pretty tricky to buy the right string (lengths) because of the multiscale. Maybe there are alternatives, but I really liked them so I just went with those string. They aren’t expensive either.

Sansamp is great, I love (over)drive on amps as well.

Collecting fuzz and distortion pedals is just a hobby of mine. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That’s identical to mine. Congrats John.

I’m still using the Dingwall nickle ones mine came with, I’ll probably put the stainless ones I’ve got on next weekend now I’ve had a chance to get used to the nickle so I can hopefully get a good comparison.

There are other brands available. I was googling this over the weekend. Here’s the list I made a note of:

DR make a nickle multi scale set:

And a Stainless Steel

D’Addario also make some:

S.I.T make ‘Dingwall style sets’

Fret nation has a couple of 5 string custom sets from Stringjoy:

And a fanned fret set from Dunlop but again a 5 string set:

I saw this brand quite well spoken on in a couple places:

And also these guys have a bunch and a good rep from what I saw:
