Yep, Owsley “Bear” Stanley was the Dead’s audio engineer and the lead designer of the Wall of Sound.
He was also crucially integral to Alembic as the founder, key designer and lead audio engineer, largely responsible for its development as a company and its products.
Alembic began its guitar and guitar gear phase by building stuff for the Dead, David Crosby, Jack Casady, John Entwhistle and John McVie. More followed.
Yep, he and Ken Kesey turned on Jerry Garcia. The rest of the band soon followed and the Psychedelic Era was born with the Dead’s evolving music. Many famed San Francisco bands such as Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and dozens of others followed suit to contribute to the style.
Owsley Acid was renowned for its purity, containing no speed or other tainted crap that became ubiquitous. I got hold of some Owsley acid once and it was indeed superior.
I got this widow last week. When I unpacked it last week, it had a chip that occurred during shipping. I immediately sent a picture to my Sweetwater rep, he said they would take care of it, someone else called me the next day. They are getting more in in October, and I should hang on to this one until then and they will send me a new one. I haven’t been able to pick it up since then.
I have a new Offbeat bass which should arrive tomorrow, and don’t need another bass. And I have a Joe Dart bass coming next month. And the blasted bass weighs in at just over 10 pounds.
