Of course, the EU being the EU, they do not set the right priorities, but it’s better than nothing:
Investment in Open Source is not enough. Germany alone spends 500 Million € per year in Microsoft Licenses alone, but one time Open Source investment is 2 Billion €. That’s not enough and just plain stupid.
The EU is to late to be of any significance in the AI game. We can only lose (a lot of time, effort and money). Let’s wait and see how that battle evolves and use open source LLMs when they’ve matured and the effects of AI on society became clear.
Data centers use 2.5% of European power already, and that is without the AI craze. Here we need verystrict green energy regulations and not make the mistake to revive the nuclear nightmare or having gas turbines running all over the place. Holland was built with wind energy, and wind mills are sooo beautiful! I’m pretty sure we can built the future of good old Europe on that!
Every time I see it, I hear the flying monkeys (or guards or whatever they were) from the Wizard of Oz movie singing “o ee o, whoa-o” as they march with the cowardly lion at the rear trying to keep his tail from giving him away.
