Getting Wired

Well…I have a bass…an old bass…I want to wire up just 3 components, the pickup…which is a lipstick stye with 3 wires (2 black and the ground), a volume control, and the output jack…I know on the pickup that one black wire, the longest one in this case, is power, and the mesh sheathing is the ground…but don’t have a clue what the 3rd wire is and can’t seem to find an answer anywhere…would it be another ground?

Any idea what brand/model it is? Wiring schematics for many basses can be found online.

there must be a “real” ground, connected to the lipstick shield, and the two other wires must be the coil. So, yeah, one of those coil wires has to be connected to the ground and the other one is the output.
