Folks. On my way through BB. I am working with two basses. An SR400 with TI flats, the other a Gio which I assume has on it the stock Ibanez rounds. The Geo has wicked fret sprout, but that is another story.
Its been an education (cool) … the rounds highlight all the beginner faults (muting etc.). I want to split the difference and try the GHS pressure wounds. Which of light, med-light, medium should I try? Cheers
I’ve never seen a really good argument for pressure rounds. Only the opposite quite frankly. To me, they’re just a marketing ploy to put something in between flats and rounds. As a beginner, I think it’s better to learn and hear everything you’re doing.
I have a set on one bass- I wanted to try them GHS Mediums.
They do not eliminate finger noise but they aren’t as zingy as normal rounds.
They are ok
I like pressurewounds quite a bit. I prefer Elixir Nanowebs but I like pressurewounds over flats. They EQ really well, if you boost treble you can get a respectable roundwound tone and vice versa with bass and getting that thud from flats. As far as gauge, that depends. I like thicker gauge personally but I play with a pick most of the time and feel that thicker strings work better. It really doesn’t make much difference though. Go through a bunch and figure out what strings / thickness’ you prefer.
I tried pressure wounds because I couldn’t get Elixirs and have discovered that I like both. I discovered that with my now infrequent playing that the pressure wounds are kinder to my fingertips. That’s purely because I’ve lost that hardcore bass player fingertips of iron though.
i have got 2 basses with the medium pressure wounds on them, i have used quite a few different types and personally i prefer the pressure wounds compared to the feel of some strings, especially rough stainless steel strings, i also can highly recommend the labella super polished strings, as well as feeling good they sound very good as well , a lot of the time i play hard rock/metal bass with quite a bit of over drive and distortion so a lot of string noise is not nice, i know about practice etc to help reduce finger noise, but some strings are just not nice to play at all, and yes i have tough skin etc so its nothing to do with finger soreness, just unwanted string noise,
