I really think you’d dig ‘em. They feel, sound and play so great. I have them on my Mayones and a set sitting on the shelf for my Sire V8 string change this weekend. ![]()
I greatly dislike bright strings so I prefer DR Pure Blues and La Bella Deep Talkin’ strings.
My Fender Jazz and my LTD fretless both have LBella flats. My Spector and my Sire have DR Pure Blues and my Fender P has DR Legend Flats. At this point I doubt I’ll stray from those.
If you like DR Pure Blues, which I definitely do, you’d love TI Jazz Rounds.
Go-to strings are D’addario XL in my opinion. great strings, not crazy expensive and you can do whatever you want with that. I go from old country to sludgecore with those strings, so I guess it works.
Obviously you can find better strings for a very specific use tho.
See this is the sort of thing I was referring to, and it makes me genuinely curious.
You’ve probably compared a bunch of strings, so what do the NYXLs give you that you know all you need to do is mix accordingly?
As much as I enjoy the chromes, especially how they feel, they are a very specific kind of sound, and by extension, type of music.
At the moment, it works but I like far too many kinds of music to limit myself I think lol.
I also have a preference for more nuanced sounding strings.
As I’m not one for slapping, I don’t really care too much about brightness.
I do want enough mids to be present but I’m not looking to compete with a guitar or keyboard in terms of spectrum.
I am a lifelong fan of D’A steel string acoustic guitar strings. They do good work.
I’ve also had D’A strings on several new basses (most pre-strung by the manufacturers, and one by a previous owner) — and they were…OK. Nothing to whoop about, but they were serviceable as opposed to being remarkable.
I tried D’A NYXLs and they were alright, but, IMO, again unremarkable.
That said, keep in mind that different players, genres, and plucking/picking prefs play enormous roles in what works for you, or not.
Generally, to me (so feel free to not agree), D’A strings are dependable, readily available, and largely inexpensive. In short, they work for most players, budgets and genres. I’d rather have them around than not. But they’re not my faves, by a long shot. EB strings also fall into this category for me, but I prefer D’A over them by a mile.
No offense intended to anyone who likes these strings. Just my takes. YMMV
so what’s your favorite ?
TI Jazz Rounds (and Flats). From there, it’s DR Pure Blues, SIT Foundations, and Stringjoy. What can I say? I prefer round core strings.
thanks, I might try them to compare to the XL’s ![]()
To me they feel great, have a nice bright sound, and are inexpensive. The NYXL’s are basically the same as the EXLs except they are more consistent and last a lot longer for me.
will I seem strange if I say that I prefer the feel of un-coated strings ?
Not to me!
@terb I’m not sure if you’re referring to NYXLs, but they are uncoated.
oh sorry I used to believe that NYXL were coated. my mistake.
While I have you all here, is there enough of a difference between 45 vs 50 on the G string to need to make the nut wider?
I see in some scenarios some players go 50-105, or alternatively 45-100.
Wondering what would be the reason for that?
Most consistent tension vs 45-105? (seems to be the standard set)
I stick with basically 45-105. Just my preference.
Most basses ship with either D’addario EXL or fender 7250M strings so you can always start there.
they always seem like they should be by their description and i have to remind myself that they aren’t ![]()
