Good Bass Day

“Back Door” was a different euphemism back then. It wasn’t referring to a body party. It was referring to sneaking into the back door of a house so the neighbors couldn’t see. The guy going around having affairs with married women.

It’s really not a voyeur thing - if it is something, it’s an exhitionist situation. Don’t make the victim to a perpetrator!

I was innocently playing my bass. In my house. On my sofa. I had nothing to do with what happened at my neighbours (at least,. I hope so!).

Should I leave my home? No!
Is making music responding to what happens to you and what you feel about it? Most of the time!
So, that’s what I did. I also hum to the sound my coffee machine is making. I sing my “Milk” song when I drink milk.
Same thing!

Don’t be so bourgeois - if I could play the bass properly and knew anything about writing songs, you all would be present in the making of a hit.
Now it’s just a funny story. And it IS funny, at least over here in Germany

Ah, ok - that’s much better

Over here, we alwas have to giggle, when this song plays.

I dunno. I’d be pretty proud if I found out my bass playing inspired people to want to get it on.

Well, this story has not ended!
I will retune one of my basses a little higher to be able to play the final notes. Or maybe use a pitch shifter, if I can find a good plugin.

If my current neighbour is anything like the previous one, I will have inspiration for a song more often.

We have a very funny house WhatsApps group, where I can post a “cover”, as soon as I have some more input for a song.

This is a good change to the usual complaints about noisy lovemaking, non-functioning washing machines or loud arguments, where we hear people screaming “Allahu Akbar” (that’s our otherwise very nice Syrian couple, that sometimes give us the fear of an ongoing terrorist attack).

Shortly after i started playing bass, I bought all the available bass tab books from Metallica’s web store, since they are one of my favorite bands.

I’ve played little bits and pieces out of them - a riff here, a riff there - but never full songs.

In today’s practice session, I decided to actually tackle For Whom The Bell Tolls. After about an hour and a half, I have the song pretty good at 90% speed - including the iconic lead that Cliff plays at the beginning. The wife got home from work near the end of my practice session, and she said “look at you doing so good at that!”

And all on my new Sire V5 that I love so much already.

That, my friends, is a good bass day.

That’s rad! One of my dogs leaves the basement as soon as I start playing and my wife just puts headphones on now. She doesn’t even watch my cover videos anymore.

I had my first private lesson today. I wasn’t sure what to expect with my tutor. I’ve been a fan of his band for 30 something years. He wasn’t quite what I expected. Way more, normal isn’t quite the right word. I expected him to be a crusty old punk rocker I guess. At one point, I was playing Dear Prudence by the Beatles (he was talking about modes and started to play part of it) and he started singing along. By far the coolest moment I’ve had since I picked up bass. Flip side, I at one point started to mansplain one of his bass lines to him (By You, a song I did a cover for a few months ago). 15 / 16 year old me is still losing his shit inside me.

Congrats on the song victory. And for having a great bass. :+1:

Knowing who that is, I must say: SUPER SUPER SUPER COOL!!!
I read an article about his lessons some time ago … your experience matches 100% my impression I had while reading that.

Did I say VERY VERY VERY VERY COOL? It is!

Yesterday I played the Billie Jean benchmark lesson and I was REALLY frustrated I tried to do it for one hour, my fingers hurt, I was slow and had no groove at all I hated it and today I tried to do it again BUT with the actual song and not the course. I looked at the tabs and started to play AND IT WENT SO WELL OMG… what the hell:sob::sob::sob: so yeah sometimes it’s better to just stop for the day and do it the next day again or even a few days later and you improved BECAUSE you rested, I heard this before many times but experiencing it on your own is so cool!!!

@Robin21 , that’s awesome! I still haven’t given it a real shot, yet. I can fully understand using the song and not the course. I find trying to listen to the beat, follow the tab, and listen to Josh counting out loud is too much at the same time.

Confession time, that becomes a good bass day (or morning).

Last night, I proudly pass my headphones to my daughter, “Hey, listen to his!” It was a cover of a song I’ve been working on for a couple of weeks.

“Err, Daddy, it’s to slow…”

“No, it’s not!”

She listens to my cover again, then the original, then the cover, clicking to the beat. “It is daddy, listen!”

Oops!! I’d slowed the bpm down in Moises so that I could get in top of the bass line, but then downloaded the slowed track into GarageBand! :face_with_peeking_eye: d’oh!

But, do you know what? Practice slow, absolutely nail the line slow, then increase the bpm…I nailed the bass line at 7 this morning, at the right tempo :innocent:. Small wins eh?

I’d have been tempted to just fix it in the DAW

You have experienced the power of sleep. Many have written about it here before you: trying to learn a bassline in the evening, but failing, only to wake up the next morning being able to nail it somehow. Truly amazing how the brain works.
