Happy to help
Band practice last night with a new drummer. Heās my age and been drumming all his life.
In a week heās learned / learnt all the songs prior to showing up.
I was previously used to counting 12 bars before coming in on one of the songs.
He saw me counting (as we were used to playing with a drum machine) and said 'Donāt worry. Iāll do a fill, walk down the toms and youāre in on the one"
Man, playing with people who are significantly better than you are is where itās at!
This is the song weāre covering, for all you Aussies
Amen.
Preach on, Brother Barney.
Also, good jam. Such a big groove.
Today was maintenance day.
I got the Reverend and G&L broken down, cleaned, polished, fretboards oiled, screws and nuts all tightened, strings cleaned and restrung. Then checked truss rods, action, and intonation. I was surprised the intonation on both were all within 3ish cents on the tuner. I dropped the pup (G&L) on the low strings 1/4 turn and brought the high strings up a 1/4 turn (I noticed last night that the high strings were a little too quiet compared to the low strings).
I know it isnāt the most super exciting stuff, but I love maintenance. I find it very therapeutic.
First ever gig next weekend. Birthday party in a big yard. Weāre the second act. 13 songs. Tom Petty, Big Sugar, Wolfmother etc.
Just back from rehearsals. Playing with a drummer who was semi pro. Itās so good to play with people significantly better than you.
P Bass into SGT DI into Fender Rumble 800 at 80% volume sounds glorious. Betting someoneās going to call bylaw/the cops about the noise before the end of the set
Iām counting on it
I had a good bass day yesterday. Working on Billie Jean on Slow and actually hitting a few notes at the right time in the right order. Then I decided to check out the TAB for āStill Loving Youā from The Scorpions and realised I could play the beginning almost instantly. Only a few bits needed some repetition. Then I checked out the TAB for āWalking on the Moonā and learned the famous riff. Good times. Iāve been thinking about it all day today.
= good gig.
Have a blast and please keep us posted on how it goes.
Iād bet on a noise complaint.
Yesterday(today) before going to bedā¦ I decided to try something crazy and risk āMein Herz Brenntāā¦ full bassline/tempo. Song in Drop C, but yousician had it in standard Tunningā¦ so followed that oneā¦ and fingered it instead of pick.
Seeing daily practice paying offā¦ but still not convinced to record myselfā¦ one dayā¦ one day.
Fact isā¦ being resilient and working through frustration when you flop multiple times, gets you there.
Jump in, the waterās lovely!! Seriously, just give it a go, you might be surprised how much fun it is
I will echo what @Megatronpt said. Being resilient (and stubborn) pays off. Iām currently playing a song I wanted to do some time ago. Back then it just didnāt click at all. I thought it was extremelyā¦clumsy, to play. Now itās fairly easy to get under the fingers.
Just back from a 3 week road trip and band practice was last night.
Added two new songs to the set list last night (one of those was my picks).
Best part was our drummer stopping halfway through a song. Walking over to the lead guitaristās amp, turning it down and then turning mine up
New songs
Indirect feedback
Sounds like the feedback was as direct as could possibly be.
Actions speak louder than words. And lead guitarists.
Oooh, band drama! That drummer or the guitar player is going to quit the band soonā¦ Either that, or theyāre going to kick you out
The rugs are tasteful; small but effective. They really tieā¦
So how about a āgood bass couple of weeksā? I donāt think I can limit it down to one day.
A bit of a preamble, thoughā¦ I think Iāve mentioned that 2024 has just beenā¦ a shitty year for me. I lost my GF of 15 years (and with that, almost all of my social life as well), my dadās dementia has been in high gear, heās been in and out of the hospital and SNFs, and the work productivity loss from all the related stress has beenā¦ noticed.
On the flip side, Iām finally at a point where I feel like a normal human again; Iām over the break-up, Iām starting to date a little bit, Iāve got resources in place to help with my dad, and Iām able to better focus on work during work hours.
I think I mentioned in another thread (the GAS thread, I think) that I recently had a bass debacle with GC that ended on a good note, with a NOS 2016 Fender MIM Geddy Lee Jazz bass in my hands. Great bass, butā¦ itās 8 years old and in mint condition. Because of thatā¦ I started worrying about taking it to lessons or jams and damaging it. I solved the problem though, in a typically impulsive and probably-not-financially-sound JustTim fashion: I picked up a second Jazz, just a standard Fender Player series. Very similar lookingā¦ almost the same sunburst, but a standard Player Jazz neck with a pao ferro fretboard and a white pickguard.
Hereās why itās been a good bass couple of weeks: Iāve had a Player Jazz before. A tidepool blue one with a maple fretboard. It was a fine bass, but I couldnāt get the truss rod/action set where I like it without fret buzz. And the maple fretboard wasā¦ I dunnoā¦ rounder(?) than I like. So, I got rid of it. This Player Jazz that I picked up last week, thoughā¦ itās a revelation. It feels perfect when I play it, and it sounds amazing. The neck is fantastic, the pao ferro fretboard isā¦ just stunning.
Iām certain that since I started BassBuzzā¦ three years ago (wow, has it been that long?) my tastes and preferences in basses have changed dramatically, and thatās part of why this Jazz is clicking with me so hard.
But I kinda also feel like if Iād have had this Jazz back then, I wouldnāt have gone through all the basses Iāve gone through.
Iāve been hardly able to put it down, and Iāve been screaming through songs and lessons and whatnot. Iāve learned 3 new songs in the last week. Granted, one of them is very simple (Wicked Game by Chris Isaak) but even so. Iāve even been re-setting up my gear to look into recording some covers, which I kinda gave up on late last year when things started getting shitty for me.
So yeahā¦ Iāve been out of the game for a while because of life, butā¦ I think that Iām back in it now. New attitude, new gear, new ālease on lifeā, so to speak. Thatās a Good Thing ā¢.
Huge congrats, @JustTim!
While life never stops with the goddam challenges, itās life-affirming to keep on living and growing.
Hereās a tune for you. Please give a listen, or few. It helped me tremendously.
