It’s still an issue I have to consciously think about when I’m playing something a little over my skill level. That was how I recognized it. It gets better with time. ![]()
I only just discovered this “good bass day” thread and nearly every day is a good bass day for me so…I guess I’ll start sharing more.
How about a MIXED BASS DAY!?
Spurred on by a recent thread, I went about checking my Fenders for dead spots on their necks. While the Geddy Lee is clear, there is one on the Player (G string, 7th fret). Luckily, it’s not that bad… it’s definitely playable-throughable.
On the flip side, now owning a Geddy Lee Jazz, I figured it was my duty to finally learn Rush’s Tom Sawyer. I’m not doing too bad at all! I’m spot-on through measure 79, and I can get from measure 79 to 92 if I slow Songster down to about 75%. I’m really happy with my progress there.
Another fun gig. Fundraiser dance.
Got asked to turn down halfway through the set. It filled my heart with joy to hear those words.
Keep practicing, the payoff is worth it.
Cool - looking sharp too!
Sharp dressed man?
You said no, right? Tell me you said no!
@Barney played so loud that he could not understand the request ![]()
That’s great to hear Tim. I can relate to not just having a shitty week, but a year. It just feels like a never ending nightmare. I’m really glad you are out of the storm.
Onwards and upwards!
You can stop practicing if you keep upping the suit/stage-attire game.
Damn. That band is clearly great, I don’t need to hear them, their suits say it all.
And, I hope you have a scorecard where you can keep your “turn it downs” saved.
There’s a special lounge for you at airports when you hit 100.
A good bass day was yesterday. After a hiatus over the summer, when we lost our guitarist, we found a new chap who tried out with us three weeks ago. It worked, but due to band member work commitments, we couldn’t get back together again until last night……and it was freakin’ great!
The guitarist is actually better than the one that left, and a whole lot more relaxed. The practice session was a hoot - we pushed through 10 songs, not perfectly, but considering this was only the second time he had joined us, and 6 of the songs, we’d never even tried to play with the previous guitarist, I felt we did pretty well. We’re planning the next set of practice sessions and targeting an open mic in just over a month. Oh, we also added two songs to the list that we had previously played with the old guy, making 12.
The ambition is to get to 15, then offer ourselves out, alongside a colleague’s band for pub gigs - 15 songs / 1 hr each, then build to 30+ songs. Let’s see how it goes.
Current song list is here:
Off the bottom is The Cult’s Lil’ Devil…
Oh, there a couple of upcoming covers there that I haven’t posted ![]()

Love “She Sells Sanctuary”. Nice set list.
It’s such a cool song to play!
We play a few Cult songs, Rain, She Sells Sanctuary, Fire Woman.
I like playing the guitar intros on the Bass VI when I practice.
::Looks Up Tab::
That’s a lot of 16th notes…
If you listen to the isolated bass line, it’s in 8ths, played with a pick. I play finger style as I prefer playing that way. It’s a very simple line, typifying the role of the bass to drive the song along and provide the foundation for the guitar and vocals. I flirted with using a lot of chorus, but it gets muddy, as the the guitar is hugely processed - it’s worth reading the story of how Duffy came up with the opening to the song ![]()
have a look at Fire Woman…
I’m having a good bass day.
I was listening to a hiphop track and thought the bass line was catchy… But also was able to use some knowledge from B2B to figure out how to play it…
The victories
- If I assume that’s a major scale can I figure out what key it’s in (probably)
- If I assume it’s a major scale can I figure out what they’re playing
- It’s cool so maybe it’s pentatonic (nope!)
- What if it’s minor (nope!)
- OK so it’s in C major. How do I count it (counting is probably the most challenging aspect of B2B for me). OK. Figured that out.
- Can I play along. It’s fast. But with a lot of mistakes.
- How about I find some hiphop drums on the B1XFour and slow down. Yeah. That’s it.
- Oh. You’re fingering is making it harder. Remember that trick from a few lessons ago (usually use your pinky to stretch two frets up, but if you’re playing the note one string higher immediately before, use ring finger).
- Those two notes would be much easier if my right hand fingering was raking. (Probably, let’s try that. yes).
And having written that list, wow have I learned a lot of things from B2B that I hadn’t known previously. I’m in the middle of module 12.
Congrats! Taking stock of one’s wins is extremely important. Human nature tends to gnash teeth at failures; it’s what we tend to do.
But, instead, stay mindful of how much we’ve learned, how much we’ve done, how far we’ve come. Because that is what builds us. Keeps us happy. Makes us strong. Makes us smile. ![]()
I feel like I’m on a solid roll this week. Taking the plunge recording and rewatching myself, and… honestly sounding better than I thought I would. Don’t sound pro, but not as clunky as I expected. I’m not noticing mistakes in playback that I’m missing while playing.
Also played through “Dazed and Confused” on a whim last night and got ALL THE WAY THROUGH! The improv breakdown 2/3 through and some of the runs aren’t pretty or clean yet, but I got all the way through off book.
B2B is definitely helping a lot, as I was able to figure out what exactly is going on in those sections and how to fit in within my technical ability level.
