Good Bass Day

Thanks, @MikeC.

Great song, it is very… apropos. Great bassline, too.

Sounds like you’ve had a tough time of it as of late, @JustTim. I have family members who died with / of Alzheimer’s, so I understand the strain this puts on those that are in a caring role. You have my empathy.

Re: the basses, I applaud buying a second, one can’t have too many  I would also offer the observation that basses are there to be used. While I love my Dingwall, I will take it out of the house to band practice and jam sessions. Granted, I’m careful with it, I’d hate for it to get damaged, but equally, I think it needs to be played in the context for which it was designed. My mum recently died - all the ‘Sunday best’ crockery and those clothes that were saved so for a special occasion? They never were used and ended up in a charity store :worried:

Obviously, views and experiences differ, and I respect that.

Stay strong :metal:

Yep. Designed “and purchased.” If purchased as a collectible, I get it; but, the hard part for me would be which one(s) to take. None are off the table.

Glad to hear it brother. You know you’re always welcome at my place for a few minutes.

Yep, I have turned up at band practice with three basses…

Personally, I’ll take my fave player, that’s it.

A jam is a place to see what shakes out, musically. And any one of my basses can complement literally any type of music I want to play. It’s up to me to make that happen.

Agreed @MikeC I feel that I have basses that can be used in every situation, but the only reason I mention more than one, is I don’t expect my tube amp to go out, or an active bass to experience an issue, but having a backup has always been my thing. Backup purposes only.

Thanks for the positive vibes. But yeah, 2023 has sucked all the ass there is to suck. It’s turning around now, though, and as @MikeC’s song said… I’m bouncin’ back.

I totally hear that and I get it. It’s just… the Geddy Lee is so damned… pretty! And… mint! It doesn’t have a scratch on it. Not even on the pick guard!

On a more practical level, the truss rod is adjusted at the heel of the neck, so if I were out somewhere and needed to make a quick adjustment, I’d have to pull the pick guard and loosen the neck.

I do, thanks, and I nearly took you up on that a few times. But there were a few months that I would not have been good company. I do appreciate that the offer is there, no doubt.

I got pressurewounds put on my Reverend today and did a full set up while I had the strings off. The fretboard soaked in a couple of coats of oil but it’s been dry (15% humidity and below) for awhile now. I went with a lighter gauged string this time, 44 - 102, lowered the action a little, lowered pickups, and re-intonated.

Good couple days actually. Realized I am at a point in my playing where I’m able to just sort of… figure out the major bones of simple bass lines enough that I can just play along with songs I’m familiar with at tempo in only a couple minutes.

Saturday figured out “Love is the Drug” by Roxy Music. Last night figured out “Little Drop of Poison” by Tom Waits.

Granted they’re pretty simple, and are far from perfect. There are a bunch of decorative runs in “Love is the Drug” that I don’t have yet. But I figured them out well enough that I could hang with a garage band practicing.

I am not quite 3 months into learning bass, and just wrapped Module 11 in B2B.

Nice! I’ve finished module 10 last night, so I’m about to start 11. Looking forward to it.

Just finished Module 12 (however I have a back log of songs to complete on fast). Finally got an electric a few weeks ago so just in time to learn slap.

I still have Billie Jean open on fast. So far I managed to get the rest done although some are sloppy. I am pushing through anyway because if I don’t, I will spend all my time trying to perfect a fragment and not going anywhere. I’m going to repeat the entire course once I’m finished and then give myself time to get it all technically right.

Billie definitely gets easier over time. It’s actually a pretty great warm up song to get those fingers limber. Papas got a brand new bag was still a pain in the butt the 2nd time through the course.

I’m 95% there on Billie Jean, similar on Papas got a Brand New Bag and Higher and Higher.

Oh, man… High and Higher was a mess but at least there was sound. With Billie Jean I’m fumbling all over the place and all notes end up muted

Try and hit the frets with a light touch. This ^ makes it sound like you’re pushing down too hard. A lighter touch will also make you fret the notes faster.

I managed BJ on medium recently, and it was actually recognizable as well, so there is progress.

Yes, once the speeds goes up, I’m trying to dig into my bass. You’re absolutely right about that. :joy:
