There is a major scale, a minor and a blues scale. Is there a goth scale?
D minor. It’s the saddest of all the keys.
Unless it is the Sisters of Mercy, then it is a minor scale played like a major scale.
Those who know the sound, know.
There are a few more scales than just these three…
Here you can find 400 of them. Perhaps one of them could be the goth scale!?! ![]()

This ones great, give D dorian a go. Same sort of minor-y sound but a little more exotic.
Just skip the harmonic minor scale - it sounds Arabian
I would try Phrygian myself
Floodland is a good example.
Mostly minor but played in a defiant uplifting way.
Kinda suits the vibe of the background to the album ![]()
That album is amazing and actually straight up major in a few songs, while still sounding very goth rock. Like Dominion/Mother Russia, which is actually a major key. And yeah the story behind it and the Mission split is pretty funny; I actually like what he did with Patricia more than what he did with the Mission dudes (though First Last and Always is great too).
Floodland is easily my favorite Sisters album, Driven Like the Snow is from it too.
BTW the bassline to Driven Like the Snow is a really fun one, not super difficult either. It’s my favorite Sisters song.
You see the t-shirt I am wearing in the profile pic right?
I kinda like the SOM too ![]()
Hah hadn’t noticed until now, awesome ![]()
Robert Smith: “We were not goth”
Lol Tolhurst: “Yes, we were”
Now, where do the Doors fit on that scale?
True, psychedelic hippy goths are missing from the list! The closest one is number 3, but not quite.
Doors are always entry level. ![]()
Or exits. Often at The End.
Or exits. Often at The End.
At times they’ll be locked though, and you’ll need to Break on Through
