Ground wire broken off

Hey Bass friends,

Picked up my bass this morning and was noodling away for about 5 minutes until suddenly the amp started humming. At first I thought it was the cable but it seems like the ground wire has broken. It looks like it broke off the output jack on the inside but I can’t seem to find any loose wire hanging around. Will I need to remove the pick guard to find it on the inside?

Yes, your probably going to have to dig around and find it.

I see the solder joint it was connected to. Take off pickguard and have a peek

20 minute job, plus you get to look around inside your bass.

I can’t seem to find any loose wire that would have broken off that solder point, I’ll attach a photo but its pretty difficult to see because of all the wires

Damn that is like a rats nest. You need to look at all those black wires that are soldered to the bottom of each of the pots, and make sure they are all attached to something. One might go to the jack.

The ground side of the circuit is a single continuous circuit so just rewiring the jack to it at any point on the ground path is fine. Then just make sure the bridge ground is also connected to it.

But yeah, you should be able to find the original wire

That’s the problem though, I cannot find any loose wire at all. From different diagrams of PJ basses online, it should be coming off of the tone pot it seems, but there is just nothing loose in here that would have broken off.

Well if you know how to solder, you can add a wire from the jack to the tone pot or any of the pots. Just solder it to the bottom of the pot.
