Goals for this month? hopefully get a festive tree up in the next week, that’s about it.
My latest hobby is video editing, born from the desire to upload interesting videos to this forum.
I don’t get out much nowadays, and don’t drink, so there won’t be any ‘celebrating’ in the local pubs this year.
As for Christmas itself, it’s just me and my 29yr old son, so the present buying is done. Just some food shopping for Christmas day, and we are sorted.
I am content with what I have, and will make the most of it
I’m 73 years old. My primary goal is to keep breathing.
Christmas is a time to spend with my daughter and her family which includes my two granddaughters. Rather than buy them presents I honor and old family tradition (one I started) of taking them out after Christmas to shop for a present(s) from Grandpa. I did this with my two daughters after my divorce from their mother.
There are fewer goals for gear this year some of which may require selling some of what I have. There’s one thing I’d like to have to complete my bass rig but I’ll wait for a bargain on it before buying. Then it’s getting my desire to play some gigs again back online and begin giving bass and guitar lessons again in my home studio.
Music is my hobby and it has been since I was fourteen years old and began playing in bands since I was fifteen. I should retire from it completely but somehow I can’t seem to accept that as a final solution. So I’ll find a way to get back to performing again one way or another. It’s just too enjoyable to let go of completely.
A tree up next week is worthy. Going for a live tree? No judgment here, just asking. Do you have a tradition for decorating the tree? Color , Lights , Ornaments , etc
Interested in this video editing you speak of. Style , Gear , Software, etc
And what is the favorite/exciting gift you purchased?
Spending time with the family rocks. Playing the Grand Grandpa is the best.
Let’s sell some goods. If you have the passion , please dive into teaching bass and guitar lessons. Especially for the youth.
What a wonderful hobby!! Would be interested in hearing about performances of yours in 2025. Even better , hearing about performances by you students. That would be great
I’ve contacted School of Rock about their requirements for an instructor. That’s where teaching younger students and getting them to the level of being able to perform with others would best be served.
Unfortunately the contact I was given wasn’t helpful at all. Beside telling me they weren’t hiring any instructors now she asked me to send a resume she’d stick her drawer where I’m sure it would get prompt attention when next they do need an instructor. Cue up the song “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You”.
She wasn’t even able to tell me whether or not a degree in music was required and ability to read and play from notation or tablature. I responded to her email saying I have nearly 50 years experience playing in bands and have taught lessons many times over the years. If that’s not what you’re looking for please let me know.
My younger daughter’s boyfriend is an instructor at a SOR in Washington state. They definitely do not require a degree in music to teach. He’s got experience touring as a guitarist (what he teaches), but no degree.
That helps a bit but since each location is a privately owned franchise I would imagine they can set their own standards for their instructors. Maybe I’m just too old school for them but what’s wrong with them inviting me in for an interview at which I could not only present my credentials but also jointly discuss their needs vs my skills at teaching as they want students taught?
They can’t tell anything about my abilities as a player or a teacher from a piece of paper. I guess they’re not hurting for instructors so their interest is lukewarm at best. But they do have two locations nearby and I have yet to stop at the second one to see if I get a different story.
Dang this was well timed. Been having a rough patch in the real world lately. Heading up to NY Thursday to remember a best friend who passed away the week before Halloween. Known him since 94 from College. My goal is to get through it and the holidays and get over my fear of trying to tackle the B2B. Everyone says it’s at your own pace and worth it but in my head I just keep questioning. Just need to do it. Not getting younger that is for sure. 2025? Hope it is awesome. Much thanks to you all… appreciate every single one of ya!
December… I’m with @howard , I just want to sit for a minute. The past 9 months or so have been insanely crazy at work and I have very little work/life balance.
The video editing is just my YouTube vids for this channel. I’ve tried to get a bit creative lately. I have a cheap audio interface that I record my bass through and into Audacity. Everything else, including sound editing is done with Davinci Resolve 19. It’s such a great program to use. I’ve bought the paid version now. Also playing around with Affinity Designer 2 for some arty type noodling. Just some basic logos, nothing too complicated.
I think many of us have had a rough year, @Snowdog sorry for your loss.
My mental health has took a battering this year, I nearly didn’t make it this far. Family issues, work issues. I cannot emphasize enough how much my bass playing has helped me through the bad times.
I’m glad to be feeling like things are improving, and actually really looking forward to Christmas this year now
Peace and Goodwill to all people…especially the peace part
Thank you! Yea losing my friend of 30+ years who was also a well known drummer in the Nashville community where he lived hurt. Then the day before Thanksgiving my wife got bit by a German Sheppard whose owner didnt think to lock him up as he worked on the fence…then to finish the hits that kept on coming my mother in law passed last week. That was a good for her as she was in the final stages of dementia. It still hurts though. I just got back from Utica, NY to remember the dear friend. Was a good trip and reminded me I dislike snow now days. Lets make Dec a good thing. Love to you all and happy bass playing
