Happy Thanksgiving 2024

To all of you who celebrate:

Enjoy and don’t argue with that one uncle

Here is our bird from two weeks ago (old tradition with friends to have a get-together with a turkey, not exactly on the US Thanksgiving day, but a weekend close by):

(Some bacon from the initial slow cook remained for the final “burn”; the rest was consumed as a pre-dinner snack)

oh yeah! best way to cook a turkey in my hungry opinion, I dry brine the turkeys for 4 days. The skin is so crispy it’s like potato chips.
We cooked 3 turkey this year, one for me, one for the wife and one for the kids, JK.

2 are for our friends. I also honey glazed some Ham.

I have not, but this is mentioned pretty much every time, along with the other option, i.e., deep-frying the bird in peanut butter

I have an electric turkey fryer… a lot safer than the propane type and can use it in my garage. I would have the “boys” club down there: beer, whiskey, farts, etc… while the womenfolk do the rest upstairs on Thanksgiving.

I like deep frying, but peanut oil is not cheap. Need to do it more often to make it worthwhile.

(On edit: I meant to type “darts” in my response above… but would be apropos to leave it in… as the saying goes: if the foo shits.)

I think you were very right with your first statement describing the garage festivities. After all, darts are optional.

48 hour brine, a 9 hour smoke yesterday then a few minutes in the oven to warm it up today. Still juicy as can be.

It was honest, subliminally, but honest nonetheless… LOL.

My parents are retired and just moved out to the western slope (of Colorado) last month. Our kids are grown and live on either coast, so my wife and I just did Costco sides and a ham tonight. No stress, next to no dishes. Was also nice.

Very chill Thanksgiving Day for us. Just my wife/kids and my son’s girlfriend. Smoked a turkey breast (36 hour wet brine, seasoned with butt rub, smoked in my old trusty weber kettle, indirect heat, about 300 grill temp, 2 hours to get to 163). My wife made cornbread dressing, bacon wrapped green beans, mashed potatoes, and a chocolate fudge pie. Opened a good bottle of wine, played some board games with the kids after dinner. Pretty great day all around. I hope everybody here had a great Thanksgiving Day. That includes everyone not in the US who just had a regular week and didn’t get to eat themselves into oblivion.
