If only there were videos on the different sounds of J vs P vs P/J basses

Listened to them all

Well then you know all you need.

Why? There are more jazz pickup designs. Delano, EMG jvx are exceptionally beefy so does Fralin Jazz pickups. Plus, that looks lik middle and bridge position so it will present another interesting tone altogether.

No.

  • don’t like the sound of (stock) JJ
  • looking for a way to make JJ sound like PJ

I hope that the DP123 solves that.

I realize this is completely subjective @Whying_Dutchman but I own a P Bass and Jazz bass. I never felt that the Jazz bass lacked anything. It’s slightly different but it definitely has “soul”.

Here’s some examples of covers I’ve done. I could have used a P Bass but I really don’t think the Jazz bass is the lesser choice here. Just oh so slightly different. Maybe give a JJ a whirl. You might even like JJ after a while? Timing and feel are waaaay more important than pickups

Absolutely. In fact the dirty little secret is that as much as we all like to navel-gaze as bass tone connoisseurs, the actual tone of the dry bass sound matters a lot less than any of us like to admit. For recording, anyway. And live tone really matters even less as acoustics in live houses are generally garbage

Dry tone is like #3 on my list when evaluating instruments, well behind feel and look. So many ways to fix tone, far fewer ways to fix the others.

So, do I prefer the sound of P pickups? Absolutely. Could I make a J work out? Yup, and I have.

That’s actually very helpful. Couldn’t concentrate on the sound cause of the great Kayak video though
But you approached my idea of tonatlity very well.

(Note to myself: must learn that stupid “Flowers” song too ^^)

I guess my question is: if the JJ sounds thin on the bass (we’ll know this week), can I resolve that (with a DP123)?

But your videos are the first ones that make we worry less.

My “fear” came from having played some terrible JJ’s in stores and playing a great/cheap P bass after.
I like the full/warm sound of the P bass.
I also like the sound of my little 24" Blackstar, though it’s missing “depth”.

Best sound ever was my old ESP (double humbucker), but I had issues with the long scale (left shoulder is destryed due to stupidity).

Humbuckers are pretty much the diametric opposites of J pickups, tonally. Every failing the J has around lacking oomf is fixed in the typical humbucker tone, and every failing occasionally seen in neck humbuckers around lack of distinction/muddiness is fixed in a single coil

They sound nothing alike.

Unfortunately, German stores don’t sell “timing and feel”. I have to mod myself for that

In terms of “feel” - my old ESP made me kind of “dream away”. Can’t explain. I was swimming in sound. It filled the room and resonated in me.
Playing dry, that is.
So it was easy to loose myself in a song.

The JJs I played in stores felt decoupled, they did not touch my soul (if I have one) because it didn’t have it…

So get a HH bass

Try a light one like an Ibanez SR or Yamaha TRBX. Should help with the shoulder, along with positioning the bass differently for reach.

Need short scale. Shoulder!

I am sure you can find shorties in HH. Maybe a short scale HH stingray exists?

The Gretsch G2220 would have been perfect, if it really had Humbuckers. You might remember the “scandal”, when LowendLobster found out it was not!?

So buy one, and put in humbuckers?

I actually thought its single coils sounded good myself anyway, definitely better than J’s TBH. Cute little bass.

Or for that matter buy any Gretsch, most have humbuckers and many are shorties.

Remember, in the end what matters is if you like it and want to play it.

I mean G&L shortie with a humbucker (Fallout) would be in the ballpark? It’s the import line so more reasonably priced.

Googled it already. Humbuckers exist, but only in the states. The site is special…

There you go!
