In fact this one was very high on my list. I really like the sound!
But I watched the LowendLobster video a few months ago … and it is a really big short scale that might not resolve my shoulder issues by the looks of it (LowendLobster compares the size to a 34"…)
I cannot play it here in Hamburg, and the online stores are (rightfully) fed up with me sending back basses all the time.
Why? I think it is great to unmask the marketing promisses when they sell something that it isn’t!?
Yeah … I read about the TV Jones Humbuckers. So that would be ideal … but you can’t get them in Germany, and I really want to listen to them and have the option to return…
The guy shouldn’t be taken seriously for reviews but I have to admit he was right a out the 2220. The thing is - its stock single coils sound better than stock Fender pups
I think it is a good sounding bass and the controversy was way overblown for sure. I would definitely not have returned one over that as it sounds good for what it is.
This is the first time I don’t agree with you!
For me it’s the opposite: when I saw his videos the first time, I was like: “WTF?”.
I dismissed them after 30 seconds - but I was wrong!
Now I have seen quite a few and I enjoy the mixture of nerdiness, serious information and great playing!
I appreciated him finding out about the fake humbuckers too.
I think it is outrageous what Gretsch did, but I am very sensitive about fake marketing/sales, cause I always need to verify vendor information on a technical level in my job. They always try to f#ck me, and not in a good way…
I don’t think it was outrageous, I think it was a goof. Gretsch owned up to it, made good to those who bought it and was unhappy, and did the right thing.
It’s a good quality, good sounding, $300 bass. The mistake is out of character for the company, and yes point it out and get it taken care of, but it was blown all out of proportion.
Yes, and also a dingwall and some other excellent Squiers and Fenders. The Yamaha one was especially bad as the bass seemed to just need a pickup height adjustment based on his criticism, which otherwise was only basically “I don’t like how it sounds with my favorite strings”.
The dingwall he ended up modding to sound like his Jazz bass. This should literally be prosecutable as a crime
yup, widely regarded as a top tier instrument. Except on Lobster World.
Also slammed were the Steve Harris Signature (ditto), the Dingwall Combustion (ditto), and there was one that irritated John but I forget which (maybe an Aerodyne?) that he panned.
tl;dr, if Lobster hated it there’s a solid, solid chance I will love it
Gretsch and their owner company Fender are not in the habit of making false claims. They don’t have a history of it, quite the opposite. Call them out on it? Sure. Pitchforks and torches? Bit much.
I am actually trying to remember ever agreeing with him. Hmm, he likes Sires, and hates the Gold Foil things. I am down with those
And to be clear, I like him and his content a lot, just not his “reviews”, which are much closer to personal taste than objective evaluation. Which, for a bass channel, I don’t need to see.
