HELP! JJ vs PJ (DiMarzio DP305N/DP302N vs DP126)

Can’t remember the model # right now (5220 maybe?) but I’ve got the older Gretsch shorty with a single non humbucking humbucker. It really does sound pretty great and it’s definitely got personality of it’s own. It might be the one I use for my first video cover. I don’t wanna drop my BB and both songs that I’m working on right now are in Eb. I’m between the Gretsch and dropping my trbx and playing through the J pickup primarily on it. I was fiddling with that tonight.

Edit:

it is a really big short scale that might not resolve my shoulder issues

The Gretsch is by far the lightest of my 3 basses. It really isn’t close. The TRBX isn’t heavy and the BB is built to go to war, the Gretsch is light enough that I use my old 2" strap on it, where my Yamaha’s have the 3.5 and 4" straps on them.

Well FYI, PJ does not sound like a P+J it’s their own thing. I have several they are not the same. P on the PJ is close enough to the normal P but the J is a little different to notice.

Yes. A P/J can sound more or less just like a P-bass but never sounds close to a J-bass at all.

Yes, the bridge pickup on Jazz bass is closer to the bridge than it would be on a PJ.

But closer to the bridge would translate to a “deeper” sound, if I understand physics correctly (I’m just an ex-psychologist, so I’m surely wrong)?
Reason: the string moves more if it’s closer to the center.

At least that’s my theory.

So that would in fact mean a better tone, at least for me…

Nope, the opposite, thinner.

Eh, sorry … you’re of course right … 4 hours sleep … I read “bridge” and my brain said “neck”! That’s why I said: “the string moves more if it’s closer to the center”…

Need some coffee

Apparently I’m not alone with wanting P/J on the MV-4JB: Harley Benton on Instagram: "💪 Our MV-4JB. 💪 Who would like to see a return of them? #harleybenton #harleybentonofficial #yourstyleyourgear #bass #basses #harleybentonbass #harleybentonmv"

holy crap this thing weighs 11 lbs

Hahahaha! No! 3.9kg (8.6 lbs)- which is still a lot (8,6 lbs).

which bass did you order, exactly?

I ordered the new model Harley Benton MV-4MSB. The old one does not “exist” anymore. You will not find it on Thomann though, as there was a 5 minute glitch on the Thomann web site that I immediately used to purchase it.
Purchase = confirmed!

Difference to the old/better model:

  • no Gotoh Tuners anymore. “Modern” tuners instead (JB-350). That s#cks!
  • finally a pickup seletion switch - which I will replace with blend.
  • JJ instead of P/J: HBZ-Custom Wound AJB-B alnico 5 single coil (bridge) - HBZ-Custom Wound APB Alnico 5 single coil (neck). My nightmare.
  • 38mm nut instead of 41mm
  • only four colours, but I will go for their “pretty in pink” and black…

Yes these do not exist on the Thomann or HB sites at all.

what was this glitch and what is the advantage to order during it ?

I think they switched the staging system to production for a few minutes, so you could see (and order) new products.
They switched it back, but I had already ordered - so no going back for them. That is the advantage - I will definitely have it (the old model was very popular and soon out of stock).

Officially you cannot get the new Harley Benton MV-4MSB now, but it is already teased on Instagram (see above).

I have chatted and phoned several times with them, to make sure the order is real. It is. They have done setup already, but I think they need the GO for sending out, possibly when all basses are checked and setup!? Or maybe they planned a marketing campaign?!

Don’t care! Want my bass ^^

Yay - Thomann made a mistake.

It looks like a P/J config on the pics, though the description says: 1 HBZ- custom wound VJB-B Alnico 5 single coil (bridge) and 1 HBZ- custom wound VPB Alnico 5 single coil (neck)

Also, Pink’s Hot is finally on it’s way to me!

Now I can think about proper P/Js
