Help me create a bass line

Hello,
Disclaimer / Warning - Music lovers please don’t click on the link below

We are preparing for our “yearly concert” with our music teacher.

This year, my youngest son is joining the party with his Saxophone.

He will play 2 songs

  • Hey jude (he joins in the last par to replicate the ta ta ta ta… Ok not very clear I agree)
  • “Fais Dodo” which is a F / C / Dm / A chord progression (He is using an Soprano Sax)

for “Fais Dodo”

At the moment, I created a bassline based on chromatic approaches ( as I wanted to practice them" but I’m happy to get more ideas ! (II F A C (A#-B) II C E G (E-D#) II D A F ( B-A#) II A C E (G-F#) II)

Here is the result

Lots of things to be improved to turn this into music but a lot of fun and pride from the older brothers (and father of course ;-).

Help me create a better bassline !

Thanks

Hey,

That sounds pretty good already! Live recordings from sessions always sound a bit wonky, but you guys are together and it sounds like music. :+1:

Here’s my suggestion for a bass line.

  • Decide which instrument you follow. For example in the outro part without sax, you could go with the guitar, in the sax part you could go with the sax to start, then switch to your walking line.
  • Often, you can base the rhythm on the kick drum. Try to play less, e.g. root/fifths, so you have space for your baa-ba-ba rhythms.

Post the result, I think this is going to be great.

Cheers,
Antonio

First, very cool to do this together with your sons - way to go!

Second, (and sorry for being a bit of a stickler), you guys need to tune a bit more

Third: as for the bass line - I would probably stick to triads and keep it diatonic; so, e.g., F A C (F E) II C E G (A G) II D F A (E B) II A C E (hold) II (sorry, no notation right now; I hope you can see which way I am going…)
(Note: hold the E at the end to break the “monotony” of the rhythm; then, it has more impact when you pick it up again

Finally: are you sure, it’s A and not A minor (the last chord)?? If it is A, you’d need to play a C# instead of the C
(But, it is likely A minor)

I love this tons.

The bass line is great.
No notes!

If ya want -
You can just keep the bass line exactly as is, and sometimes play the non root notes, sometimes don’t.
Sometimes play the walk, sometimes don’t.
There’s a ton of bass line in what you wrote. The only thing you need is the root, so mess around with only root, then the whole thing.
I love the variations that you can get into with a bass line like this, so I’d say -
Have a core bass line that feels good, and explore within it a bit.

Or, if that is terrifying and aweful, don’t, and just play what you wrote.
Sounds great.

And this band absolutely rules.
I love this.

The original song is in 3/3 do you want to keep that or play it in 4/4 like your video?

Do you mean 3/4?

Great remark , thanks for asking

I think it is easier to stick with 4/4 as

  • the drummer is playing around with a lot technics / rythms as this is really a “recreational song” (this doesn’t help me “lock in with the drummer” as I have no clue what he is ghoing to try  and he is more a 4/4
  • as you have seen / heard our sax can be a little unpredictable but seems to connect rather well with our 4/4

Thanks !
You’re right

  • we had to retune after the song
  • It is Am

I like your ideas !

thanks for the nice feedback

Not sure we will make a release out of this but I can say that this brings smile to all of us

Indeed, your idea to create variations makes a lto of sense and was suggested by other as well

For context, our “yearly concert” is regrouping all the friends that ended up using our music teacher (their kids attented some of our lesson by accident and convinced their parents to start a band !) - so it is very amateur but it pushes all of us to work/ rehearse

I might post a few songs here but I need to sort out the recording quality (I’ve seen a few post for simple / low budget approaches but still slightly better than iphone)

Thanks !

  • Often, you can base the rhythm on the kick drum. Try to play less, e.g. root/fifths, so you have space for your baa-ba-ba rhythms. = great idea !, I was wondering if I could try to echo them (but this needs some quick felxibility as the Baa-ba-ba are a little unprediactable :-). )

Would you like a tab you can use for ideas?

I think I misread it in a rush at work-I read it as wanting a bass line for Hey Jude

This one I have already thanks to Songster
