I have always been a great admirer of David Bowie’s bassist, Gail Ann Dorsey.
Can you please help me identify make and model of the bass she is playing in this VH1 live session? Thanks!

MusicMan StingRay is her main bass then the Fender P bass

The first one you see on the video is MTD Micheal Tobias Design Grendel 5

Because that sounds pretty much like a normal Jazz bass going through a chorus pedal to me.

More than equipment it’s her finger tone. She has quite a unique plugging skills. Check out the sample of her playing on the interview with Scott Devine

MTD hand mades are some of the finest available.

Michael Tobias is well known for his asymmetrical neck on the Tobias basses. They are very comfortable and fast. I’m not a fan of a hockey stick headstock and MTD is very close to it. I wish he could go back and use something similar to the Tobias headstock.

MTD are fine modern basses. I’m not drawn to their looks necessarily, but they fit a niche market.
