Hipshot D Tuner for Sire M2 V3

Also…The threads are worn down; I wonder if they forced it during installation… I don’t have the right Allen key to tighten it.

Oh, I see. Hmmm … that’s really not much. To me it does not look good - but that doesn’t say anything…
Not sure if that’s the cause for your issues - but always a good reason to get new/proper strings! I’m sure that you willl get a lot of advise on new strings here

You should always have about 12cm string remaining, measured from the peg.

A helpful video:

EDIT @Evil_Morty - were the strings installed by professionals???!

That looks s#cky-s#cky! But usually there is no reason to touch that screw during installation. So: WTF!!!
I also don’t see it as a cause for your issues, as long as it is not totally loose.

Nut and bridge are ok?

If so, it is either the winding of the strings around the peg or the tuner itself can move under tension (unlikely but possible). Or the string itself s#cks! What is it?

You don’t happen to live near Hamburg/Germany? I am fascinated by your issue

Nah sorry, I’m in France. And as a good French man, rigth now I’m confused and pissed off !!

I’ll change strings tomorrow evening, I don’t have spare set @home.

Nut and bridge ok yes :-/

nahh by me unfortunatly ^^

Fetchez la vache!!

OK, I just had a second look at your string winding. Can you make two pictures of the peg, so I can see the winding - one in open and one in closed position?

Reason: in the open position, there is even less string around the peg. And that COULD be an issue!

And: before you get new strings, search this forum. There are many great discussions about strings here. Might as well get some perfect ones (depending on your bass and music taste).

not sur I get what you mean, open/closed position of the hipshot and pics of the strings around the peg ?

Nothing specific to hipshots here but this is from the Sire Marcus Miller Manual available at: Congratulations on your new Sire! – Sire USA

They recommend enough length to wind three times around the peg.

I understand, I messed that up. I’m sorry to bother with this newbie error/mistake, But I thank (all of) you for your patience.

So you can see if the string is ā€œhanging by a threadā€ in the open position…

More windings = more ā€œstabilityā€ā€¦

Don’t be sorry!

a) It’s always interesting to solve issues b) we learn ourselves through this c) now the next one will find this thread and avoid the mistake c) and it’s better than a discussion about sustain or tone wood

Also: it MIGHT be the issue, but it also might not. But it’s lilkely that it is ^^

Hmmmmm … I would be very afraid to loose an eye when playing
Change the strings and then let’s hear what happens!

PS You could put the A string on the E tuner, just for fun, and see if it behaves better! It’s longer, so you should have more windings.

Thank you for the time you spend reading my messages and asking me to perform actions to help me resolve this situation.

I ordered strings via Amazon( 1€ with gift cards) 'cause I won’t have time tomorrow to go to my music store ; i know you said to be patient and asked about that on the forum but for the purpose of the test I need to know ASAP if it’s solving the issue…to be continued

I thoroughly enjoy stuff like that, now worries

Which strings did you order? I am not an expert, so it’s just curiosity!

You can do the A=>E test now

I took D’Addario- EXL170 - Light, 45-100 - LONG SCALE ^^

I’ll see 2morrow, I’m afraid to be dissapointed if changing A => E doesn’t work ^^

Ah, I have the EXL170s on one of my short scales. For the price they are good!

OK… So it seems that it was INDEED the shortness of the strings that made the Hipshot malfunction!
