Me too, but ironically it was Josh that question-mark-ifed me years ago when he made me ask myself, “Can I play bass?” “Am I too old to play bass?” The more I watched those Orange Videos, the more and more I was convinced the answer was “Yes!”
Am as I as far as would have liked to have been when I started in December 2019? No, but I am still convinced I can.
Well, I’ve been “embracing the suck” and “doing this 10 minutes everyday” and…and a funny thing is happening: I’m getting better. I’m working my way though the PDF. I’ve got a ways to go, but it is really starting to feel good.
I’ve also resolved to hit the forums more consistently, and keep up with everyone. I was so sorry to have missed Jazzbass19. He was one of the really good guys.
While new to the bass, I did try to ‘play’ guitar 30+ years ago. Back then, I had a book of cord shapes enabling me to learn the more common ones (think A, B, C, D…) and by ear, I learnt the rhythm guitar parts from The Cult’s Electric album. So no lessons, no understanding of any music theory, no idea what the open string notes were on the guitar, no idea of what any of the notes on the guitar were, no real idea of how to play along to a beat, no nothing really… Oh, I was also playing a cheap acoustic with nylon strings that made my awful playing sound even more awful!
So how would I learn bass (if I could start over)? The way I am leaning now, sign up for some lessons and practice a little an often I have no pretentions of being rock god, I just want to have some fun and eventually get to a level where I might play with others and hold my own.
Mark is an excellent teacher. His approach is definitely college music school and his Talking Bass courses are deep and detailed.
Each course assumes no prior knowledge of its topic, but he ramps things up quickly. Besides that, he places the responsibility for practicing the material squarely on the student, as music colleges do. There are no play-alongs like B2B, but there are demos.
Over the last eleven years, Mark has posted over 800 free videos on YouTube, presenting everything from how to cover certain popular tunes to techniques to theory, slapping, walking bass, jazz, etc. TalkingBass.net also has a complete listing.
Yes there is a thread o ln life after BassBuzz and Mark is overwhelmingly the next choice. But know you’re going to put in a lot of theory work. It is what it is,
And it’s all great.
