Wow! Hard pass from my back.
The exact problem with my beginner/project bass. Short scale, too light body and neck dive.
My Fender P is about 9lbs and balances perfectly.
I want to play my old short scale more but it’s kind of annoying
For whatever reason Fender basses or those with similar body styles seem to fall into that 9lb weight range fairly often and typically are very well balanced. Maybe that why I keep playing them and G&Ls. They just seem to fit me more comfortably.
I really like it. If you like Ps this could be for you. The body is unexpectedly comfortable, neck is a great P neck, 41mm nut, not too chonky, flattens as you move up the neck. Punchy.
That sounds like a great upgrade! I think it would be more expensive than my bass.
The real problem is that I hardly get to try new at the store here. I need to plan a trip to the big store soonish.
A small price to pay to keep from going crazy!!!
My new little gal is pretty crazy heavy for such a small bass and the balance is unquestionably out of Whack but I’ll live. Single cut headless 5, 23” scale why not?
6.68lbs it feels much heavier in the hand unless you hold it at the top then it’s pretty light.
I had a 5 string Sterling Stingray and I’m pretty sure it weighed 10lbs. I’m a beefy dude and it still surprised me every time I picked it up.
My Reverend is in the 7.5lb range. The G&L Kiloton is about 9.5lbs, my 734a is also about 9.5 lbs, and my Yamaha BB300 is a chonky 12lber. Being basses, I’ve gotten over the idea of having the cute and sexy straps and accepted that we are stuck with the utilitarian over the shoulder boulder holders.
I got lucky with both of mine and they have both been 9.5 lbs even. Some I tried were definitely heavier.
OK it wasn’t luck, I tried a ton of them both times I bought and hand picked the ones I wanted. Amazing how much things can vary even in the same model.
My SBV is down closer to 8 lbs and my TRBX was under 8. Those were definitely nicer weight-wise, but the BB has so much maple on it in that chonky tone sandwich thing they did with the body, so it is inevitably heavy.
That maple layer plus the angled 6-bolt neck join does make a difference - you can feel it when you play, even I went full Nigel Tufnel with how the sustain feels on it
My Revstars have been heavy too, despite being chambered.
Sustain
This Fender P is not light!
Yeah but that’s a special case with Mapke body and maple neck. I absolutely love that bass. I own it 3 times. I modded it and took it to the gig and someone would make an offer for it.
He ain’t heavy
He’s my brother heavy-ass bass
Warwick and EBMM Stingray 5’s - heavy maybe 10lb
Tobias - very light just under 8lb
both my 70’s Fenders are 8.1lb
Steinberger slightly heavier
MTD 5 only 8.4lb
Are those numbers all Maybe? or did you use a scale ?
Estimate and IIRC
the Warwick and EBMM 5 will be 10lb for sure
the Tobias is just under 8lb because I remember thinking when I got it how can such a light bass sound so big??
I have played “boat Anchor” 70’s Fenders but my 2 are good medium weight , gig them both no tiredness
Well that then would be a Maybe…
There’s something to be said about clarity, = a scale.
According to Grok.
The average weight of a Fender Precision Bass (P-Bass) generally falls between 8.5 to 9.5 pounds (3.9 to 4.3 kg). This range is consistent across various models like the Standard or American Standard series. However, weights can vary slightly due to factors like the type of wood used, hardware, and overall construction.
76 Precision 4kg
71 Jazz 3.8kg
Tobias Growler mkI 3.4kg
