How to get better at bass

That RWE had some useful insights.
Early days for me here - the beginning of module 5. doing the fast workout, but not well, so…pausing the lesson, slowing it down, playing it over a few times, and what do you know?! Little improvements make me smile. Truthfully, this whole process puts a big grin on my face.
Bought a bass today. No more renting for this guy. Now that’s commitment. How to get better? For me, it’s staying the course, no pun intended. And like most if not all of you would say, finish the course, then do it again. And again, if and when necessary. Rinse & repeat.
My new bass should arrive here in a few days.
Hope you don’t mind me asking a few crazy questions, in my pursuit.

The idea that having language helps perception was the gem I took from this. And, bonus, it was in the first few minutes!!
Cool concept, and I think I can see that connecting in my experience.

Mark Smith of Talking Bass fame has made this very point for many years.

In his courses, he refers to the vital need to learn “vocabulary” routinely, which to him means several things: knowing the relationships between intervals, chord tones, arpeggios, harmony, melodic phrases, vertical/horizontal string scalar lines, walking bass motifs, and tons more.

All of these things are part and parcel of knowing not only music theory terminology but, most importantly, how/when to translate those terms and resulting techniques (vocabulary) into actual playing power.

The notion posited by some that learning music theory somehow limits or stifles a player’s creativity is utter bullshit. Knowledge is power. In all things.

Glad you found your way to BassBuzz…

Gear may give you inspiration to play more and that’s the only way to get better.

My Last gear purchase was my 3rd bass a Fender Marcus Miller jazz bass then before that a Katana 110 amp.
I played around 3, 4 hours a day for a month or so only playing the Marcus, the amp didn’t make me play anymore than regular but it’s my main amp now.
My next gear will be a Katana go and a dai, digital audio interface for recording.
I’m on marketplace daily and if the right bass at the right price gets listed I’ll get it, I don’t need another but one or two more bass’s would be just fine, to me it looks better than a picture on the wall.
Otherwise I’ll likely get a Sterling Ray4 then mode it out, maybe a Sterling sb4 which Lobster did an excellent review on recently, I’m thinking I would like it new.
Regardless if another Marcus came up for sale I would get that also, ridiculous I know but I love the Marcus that much.

This is a better picture of the Marcus.

Welcome to the community!

What new gear? I’d start with more basses!!

Please note that after repeat 4-6 cycles you might have to include « change wife » , hide basses at the office, have them delivered at a friend… if needed we have all the ticks here
