How to Start Learning Bass - Self Taught!

Most people who try to learn bass self taught… give up in less than a year. Here’s how to avoid that fate and stick with it.

If you’re doing the Beginner to Badass course, this lesson doesn’t apply to you cuz you’re in my capable hands. :winking_face_with_tongue:

Okay just kidding, this is still useful stuff especially for when you finish the course and need to figure out what to practice on your own.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you first started learning bass self taught? :guitar:

Love the content on YouTube Josh. I have been self leaning since around October 2025 and can really notice the small improvements. That is one of the best pieces of advise you have given is to notice the small improvements. Thank you.

I tried learning originally about 10 years ago. I decided to take a more structured approach this time. If I had had more organized practice last time, I might be decent now.

The Yousician part kind of struck a nerve with me since this is how I found motivation to practice somewhat regularly.

But if I’m being honest, it doesn’t really teach playing the instrument. It’s just playing a game with a bass instead of a controller.

This is why finally decided to register here and start a proper learning journey along with y’all lovely people.

I started on that. Complete waste of time for me. I didn’t retain anything, I just followed a bouncing ball. Hard pass as far as me recommending that system.

Beginner to Badass for the win :trophy:

Hey Josh,

Just found your site a couple of days ago and going through your seven day intro each day and for the first time since buying a bass a couple of years ago, now believe I can learn and feel inspired to purchase the beginners course. So it is your course I wish I had when I first bought the Bass:nerd_face::smiley:

Cheers,

Garry.
