How would you mute this?

I’ve gotten to the point where I’m getting good enough to notice how bad my muting can be. This leads to a lot of slowing down to try to get it clean. But for Living on A Prayer I’m having a hard time one one specific note.

That first open E string. I’m playing it with pinkie on 7th of A and ring on 7th of E, so I play open E then try to fret A and mute E with ring then fret E with ring. It’s really tough for me to get that coordination. Is that how you would do it or is there a better way? Maybe mute with index before fretting with ring?

I’m from New Jersey so I feel like I should try to help

The open E should be muted by your plucking hand finger, when it pulls across the A string and comes to rest on the E. That also sets you up to pluck the 7th fret on the E next, since your finger is already resting on the E.

Thank you, I’ll focus on hitting that pull across. I think my working on speed for some licks has gotten me away from coming all the way across to the next string.

Yeah there’s a lot to keep track of. And speed tends to make everything else fall apart. I’ve had to slow myself back down more than once to smooth out other things. Keep at it, you’ve got this.

I second that. Exactly how I would do it also.
