So far 10/46 is my favorite. 9’s on the 24.75" scale just didn’t have the tension for me.
My guitars…
FGN J-Standard Iliad 7 string
Schecter Hellraiser Hybrid C-1
Jackson Pro Juggernaut HT6
The Jackson is my latest addition. They are all awesome. I also owned a Fender strat and tele but those weren’t really working out for me.
Thats a great looking bass!
I went down the rabbit hole a bit deeper and I’m loving it! The good news is I’m back to 4 strings! Well kind of!
I’m really passionate to learn guitar since my childhood. But I was not allowed to do so by the family. I became a discipline lad and suppressed what I really wanted to do. Now I am graduated and I want to do what I always wanted. Last week I went to buy the guitar center and bought a new guitar. I was soo emotional when I first took it into my hand. EBMM John Petrucci Majesty 6. It cost me around $3500 with a discount and 15 days of the return policy by Guitar Center Return Policy. I am grateful to all the people and happy souls now.
Congratulations and good for you! You bought a very nice guitar. Have fun with your dream!
Wow that is a very nice guitar. I love the look of the headstock. Did you try the Petrucci plugin from NeuralDSP? It’s insane.
Love playing my mandolin.
Wish I had turned on to bluegrass earlier but I was so mired in rock and roll and BLUZ!!!
Yes Bluegrass is awesome and Bluegrass players are unbelievable musicians! What mandolin do you have? Let’s see a picture!
I have two mandolins.
A no-name F style and a customized F Stle made for by Eddie Blevins. Take a look at his stuff, amazing work.
Also have an open back Deering Good times and a resonator Deering Sierra.
Not bad for an old rocker and blues player for the past 40 years.
Just kinda opened my ears one day and there was bluegrass!
Another Mando player here. First instrument with strings that I got into, actually. That’s a looker! Hope you have years of enjoyment!!
I have been thinking about learning guitar via Justinguitar, but doing it on a Squier Bass VI.
Anyone see any downside to that?
My thinking is i learn all those guitar chords but in a more bass-y vein.
could be interesting.
[EDIT: just realized you specifically sited the Bass VI, @John_E . You know, that will probably work, as it’s just a change in octave. That said, I’m leaving my response below for posterity, in case someone ever comes across this thread with the idea to use a (4-string) bass for a guitar lesson]
You know, I learned guitar first so I can’t say this for sure… but from my experience it’s hard to translate a guitar lesson on a bass (conversely, you can use a guitar to learn bass with minimal modifications).
Some issues I can think of – It’s quite a trick to get chords to function in an audibly pleasant way on a bass. A lot of guitar lessons will have you focus on shaping your fingers around chords you simply won’t be able to make with just four strings. Right off the bat, you’ll be missing components of the C, D, G, A (and those are just off the top of my head) and you might be forcing yourself to re-learn things once you have a guitar in your hands.
That said, we run through the exact same scales on our basses as we do guitar, so if you’re just looking to do some lead/solo fretting stuff, you’ll be able to pull that off. And learning a song on the guitar will show you the chords of that song, which you can use to work out a bassline to compliment it, or a “bass version” of the song.
Personally, I’d invest in a guitar before I invested in a guitar course.
I agree with @chordsykat . You can’t do guitar chords on a bass (well you can but it will be akward). I would rather invest in a nice acoustic or cheap electric just to follow the Justin guitars lessons. The first lessons are mainly about learning chords.
I was considering using my SRC6 for the same thing, despite having a 6-string guitar or two.
Just so everyone is aware, a Bass VI is tuned just like a guitar, only an octave lower, with specialized strings. This is what I am thinking of doing.
Interesting idea. I wouldn’t do it due to the increased overlap with bass - I like where the tonal ranges sit with the standard tunings and if anything would prefer them farther apart, as bass and guitar already compete enough for midrange space in the mix. Also not my favorite (or even second) choice for pickup configuration but YMMV there.
Solo it would sound awesome though.
Yeah I am still trying to figure out if I care and what I would do with it.
