I have a Laney Lionheart LS-5 Studio head and matching cab. Only 5 watts with a 0.5 watt option which is what I use at home. Even at 0.5 watt I only have the volume set to halfway and it is plenty for home use. I have a Boss BD2 pedal plugged in the front and sounds great for what I want.
The katana is quite a bit cheaper and probably a lot more versatile though
I was given this Cort G254 today. More precisely, I traded it for a few things that I’ve had for free, so it’s a $0 guitar for me. It’s a very basic modern Strat-ish guitar, it’s quite well made except the pickups. I’d say it can compare to a Squier Standard. The neck shape and finish are really nice.
Oh nice! Yeah, Cort makes good stuff. The quality of the one I had was great - I just didn’t end up gelling with the PRS-style body like I thought I would. Which I guess makes it good I didn’t spring for a PRS
Yeah, I don’t have any passion for this Cort but it’s still a more-than-descent instrument. It will need a string change and a setup to be 100% playeable but it still works OK as is.
What I really don’t like is the mate/satin finish, I will probably polish it. Also I don’t like the cheap pickups and I will certainly change them. An EMG set could be cool, but probably a bit too expensive … I may end up with pickups I already have. Also I don’t like much that it doesn’t have a personnality, it’s just what it is : a modern HSS Strat-ish guitar.
What’s sure is that it’s a great guitar for its price
This is kind of the one criticism I have of Cort. They manufacture guitars for lots of other companies, so their own stuff comes across (to me) like high quality generic knockoffs, more than their own thing.
Which may have contributed to my kind of lukewarm reaction to mine, even after I threw in some very good pickups.
Contrast this with Fujigen, who also make everyone else’s guitars, but their own ones are quirky and cool.
Yeah, that’s true. Their business is all about generic but nice quality instruments ; that’s kinda cool already for a beginner or someone who wants a guitar that does it all without the hassles of a more specific instrument. There are a lot of customers on this segment, I guess.
today I received a Fender roasted maple neck that I bought after seing the pictures because I really wanted to avoid a bad surprise about the wood grain. I was not able to find this model new anymore, with a 9.5" radius, medium jumbo frets and a medium-C neck, so a used one was the only option. The only bad point about this neck is that it has the truss-rod screw at the bottom, not what I prefer but it will be OK. I paid 260€ for it, in a mint shape. It’s not that expensive, considering that new Fender roasted maple necks sell for about 330€ here in France.
I will use this neck for my current Strat project more to come later, stay tuned.
That is awesome. Hope that you got it for a good price.
I went from guitar 25 years to bass, just because there are too many guitar players out there in my neck of the woods.
There’s no end of guitar players! Which is why my only aspirations there are to be a mediocre one that has a lot of goofy fun and can get the job done, but doesn’t stand out
I don’t have grandiose aspirations either (bass or guitar) other than I really enjoy it and I’m having a lot of fun with it. This hobby beats buying a boat or a sports car and it’s cheaper (maybe).
