I betrayed Bass and bought a Guitar!

Did you buy it?

They are a great great deal. I really liked the J-Standard Iliad I tried, just couldn’t dig the U.

Yes, that is the one I bought. My MDB5 has a U neck and absolutely love it. I looked at some of the Odysseys but decided to go cheap and make sure the gee-tar isn’t a whim. Still pretty cheap

It does have a coil tap, J-standard fret edge treatment, which I take to mean rolled frets.

Speaking of Ikebe…

Pulled the trigger, picking it up on the 31st.

Out of all I tried it had the best feel for me.

Good Lord. Half my instruments will be Fender.

It’s a good thing that the color Blue doesn’t apply to guitars as it does to BMW drivers!

So which is Yin and which is Yang?

So the big question for my new guitar is how good is the humbucker. Will be a few days before I see it, possibly Saturday, possibly Monday.

What are good humbuckers? I looked at DiMarzio just as planning and I like their stuff, and I saw a bluesbucker. I know folks here have a lot more knowledge than I, so for blues/classic rock what are good options for humbucker neck and single coil bridge?

A lot of criteria depending on what you like. But yes, speaking about brands, DiMarzio is a serious one. It’s equivalent to Seymour Duncan, quality-wise, which is really good.

I’d say that you should look at the PAF territory. Every brand has one or more PAF-style pickups, it’s really the standard Gibson pickup.

The Seymour Duncan SH-1 is a great all-purpose PAF-style pickup, pretty standard but it works extremely well. The SD Pearly Gates is just a bit more agressive, so I’d say that a Pearly Gates bridge and a SH-1 neck would be a really excellent combination for blues and rock stuff. You can also play jazz and hard rock without any problem.

That’s just an example but as I have owned those two SD pickups, I can tell that this combination would be great and very versatile while still being purely PAF-style pickups.

The Fishman pickups are really nice on my FGN Iliad

My guitar is a S/H model

Okay, sorry for the noobness, is a strat single coil interchangeable, like would a pearly gate strat fit?

Although I see Fishman makes single coil

If that’s your question : Tele and Strat pickups are not the same. But you can use a mini HB that fits a Tele bridge, that’s what I have on Juliette : a Seymour Duncan Lil’59 which is somewhat the Tele version of the SH-1. Still different because it’s not the same form factor, not the same winding and not the same magnet, but there is this PAF-style DNA. I really like the SD Lil’59, it sounds somewhat at the same time like a PAF and like a Tele, if it ever means something.

… That said, a Tele bridge single coil works very well for classic rock too, Keith won’t disagree. And for blues you will always prefer the neck pickup or the middle position anyway.
