I betrayed Bass and bought a Guitar!

Crossed my mind, but easier to learn on electric IMO. Still, never say never

What acoustic would you recommend for the blues?

I love Big Joe Williams, when I was a kid I had his album Don’t Your Plums Look Mellow Hanging From Your Tree, which this song was on. He added 3 strings to his guitar (which you can see in close up) and tuned it D2 G2 D3 D3 G3 B3 B3 D4 D4, and put a capo on the second fret to change it to the key of A. One of my heroes, don’t think I could play his guitar. The top string was used to play the melody.

He also nailed an empty beer can to his amp to get the jangle.

You can pick them up all day every day round here for peanuts. Here’s one; $100 with a hard case. Giving it away.

This is a special branch of acoustic guitars called a Dobro.

I have run into a few people that own these, at our jam sessions, but not very often, and people that own a dobro typically also own a regular acoustic guitar. Different sound but nice.
I would not recommend one to start with. YMMV

Either the Yamaha APTX2

or the YamahaAPX 600

The APTX2 is a 1/2 size guitar similar to a Taylor mini but at less than 1/2 the price.
These are typically what people call parlor guitars. I upgrade my old Yamaha Jumbo size guitar a few years ago and purchased the APX 600.

The APX 600 is a bit smaller than the Jumbo size and Yamaha slimmed down the depth a bit.
It has an onboard tuner and electronics. Notice the sound hole is oval. :slightly_smiling_face:
Cost new is around $400 Canadian.
Note: Does not come with a gig bag.

I own a few Yamaha products, going back 50 years, and have never been disappointed with their quality so to be honest I did not check out any other manufacturers.

I am completely happy with mine and would recommend it to anyone, beginner or intermediate, but, as you know, selecting an instrument is a personal preference and YMMV.

Hope this helps.

I agree to a point primarily because of string gauge but neck shape is also a big factor.

Typically they are shipped with 11’s for strings.
I have tried 10’s and did not really notice any difference worth noting.

My Yamaha APX 600 has a slim fast neck and it works for me. :+1:

Good old Robert Johnson. RIP.
One of the Blues pioneers.
Taken so young at the age of 27.

Ooh. Kind of liking the DiMarzio Super Distortion T. It’s less Tele-sounding than the Chopper T though.

Wow @terb this sounds pretty awesome it turns out, no surprise:

Kind of wish he wasn’t testing it wet with reverb but whatever. Still sounds great.

Distortion T sounds good with an Air Norton

I emailed a question to DiMarzio the other day, and turns out they can build Strat pickups in Tele size, but it’s not on the website and not available outside the US

No big, it’s just a custom pickguard.

I’m still likely going P90 but the strat neck pup was very interesting.

Ok this is awesome. I haven’t taken mine apart yet but:

The Hybrid II Tele is routed for both a neck humbucker and a middle position pickup, and it already has P90 pilot holes drilled too. That’s just a super nice touch.

Plus:

Same electronics quality as the P-Bass, including giant cap and full size CTS pots. Looks like 250k but hard to say on the volume, need to measure. That might affect my eventual pickup selection (or not, could alway swap them, but hate to, they are nice as is).

I have a 1996 Martin HD-28VL, and I’ve played it and gigged it for almost 27 years. Can’t believe it’s been that long. Three years ago, I bought a Mexican made Martin 12-String that sounds fantastic. These days, I don’t use the HD as a bang - around, so a year ago, I bought a Fender acoustic for $200, and it’s a fantastic acoustic for the price. It sounds good enough to gig with.

So yep, I’ll play an acoustic for blues.
