Bad technique is like bad breath—nobody tells you, but everybody notices. Let’s Febreze your fretwork.
If you’re doing the Beginner to Badass course, this lesson is utterly optional - you’ll be developing solid technique as you progress through the course, and getting stuck on extracurricular vids like this is a bad idea… BUT by Module 6 or so you’ll have a lot of these fundamentals in place.
Bass Technique Mistakes PDF
Here’s the PDF with some resources to dive deeper on all the technique issues in this video -
I do a few… but curiously I tend to use my pinky more than my middle(but I try to not flip anyone!!), especially in faster songs… I suspect that arthritis is coming and finger hurts.
Josh Man pinned a question in the description box about a #1 tip.
What is the one thing that you wish someone had mentioned early on?
For me personally , I wish that someone would have encouraged me to “sing” each note as I played it. This tip would have increased my knowledge , diaphragm strength , the ability to recognize the “note” , and definitely would have created a dynamic range for when I “sing” the harmony of any particular song.
Anyway , congrats to all the Bass Buzz students that were featured in this episode. Well done folks as well all know that these changes just don’t happen overnight. Proud of you!
When it comes to singing, before my bass journey started you would call me tone deaf… but as I played more… and after I started TalkingBass’s Ear training for bassists, singing while playing has really improved my note, tone and interval recognition!
Thanks again for the opportunity, Josh! My “after” video clip didn’t make it into the final cut, but I’ve been cognizant of flying fingers every time I play now thanks to going through this exercise, and working to get them under control has definitely improved my playing.
Always stoked to see a new video pop up. And we just got one 2 weeks ago. @JoshFossgreen has been a busy beaver, especially with all the recent course updates. Looks like you may have missed one of your guinea pigs in the credits. Buzzin Cambodia Juan I believe it was…
Did Josh slipped you a note saying “see me after class”? that’s such an awesome video. Though I hope he put one about giving the audience the middle finger,
@JoshFossgreen - for some reason when I jump on the forum, it no longer shows me what topics are ‘new’ and have not been seen by me. I am realizing I am missing a lot of new topics. Did something change?
Shouldn’t need to add the categories to tracked. Pretty sure that labels all threads in that category as tracked unless/until you manually marked them some other way.
Couple things to try
Change your “new” setting to “last XX days” or “I haven’t viewed them”
Change the “automatically track” to a shorter time than 10 minutes
I think they are only marked as Tracked and show a count of posts if you’ve either posted to the thread or clicked the bell symbol on the thread to label it as tracked. But if you’ve posted to the thread it will be marked as tracked.
