going from that the pdf from the “what to learn in order video” the 16th notes are kicking my butt lol. easy to grasp, difficult to play properly
I’m posting this here, taking advantage of the thread because I don’t really know where to post it.
I’m in what I believe is the final stretch of the course, after a long break due to family matters, and although I need to review the more theoretical parts… for practice, I was thinking of starting to learn how to play complete songs. I saw the list of 50 songs on the forum, but now I also see that Josh recently uploaded a video about the 50 songs I should learn from beginner to pro. Which of the two lists should I start with? I imagine some songs are repeated, but they’re not the same. Is there any difference in starting with one list or the other? In terms of difficulty?
By the way, is there a Discord channel as I think I read somewhere on the forum?
Coming to this thread way late, but I’ve been working through Technique Builder as a fun ‘side quest’ while I work through Sight Reading and Chord Tones. It’s vey different, and a lot of fun, and a great finger coordination workout.
You should start with the songs that interest and excite you the most that are within your skill level. You should play songs that you feel and get enjoyment and satisfaction from playing. My only strong caveat is that you will also benefit more from practicing songs in a variety of styles/genres.
I’d look at the first 5 songs in each list, and just play the ones that excite you the most.
Start building your own list. Listen to music. Pick stuff that interests you and that the bass lines sound “doable”. If you have a partner or roommate or something, get their input on songs to learn.
I’ve got my “Bass Practice” list on Spotify. I can play these down through “Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2” competently by memory. Below that on the list, I need tabs to help, or I’m struggling with speed/technique, or they’re slated to learn. Quite a bit of these I took from Josh’s 50 Songs list. I learned the most from “Fade Into You”, “Oye Como Va”, and “Stir It Up”.
That is a great song - I also play it almost daily!
Her book, Music Theory for the Bass Player is a must-have. I refer to it on the regular.
Yes but it’s not used much. It was initially. Reared to house some info on the 50 song challenge (under the pin icon) and some folks used/use it but not many.
You can find info here…
It’s actually pretty busy now (though primarily a small number of very chatty folks )
Yep, some folks just prefer the discord chat style over forum posting. I dig them both so I usually keep a tab open for it.
Huh. Had no idea. Lol
I’ll have to remember to check it out again. I’m on there, and I use Discord all the time, but I got out of the habit of checking the BassBuzz channel because it was a bit of a ghost town.
I know there is already a lot of material here with the course itself/ extras/ forums, but after going through the course 2x, what is the next step for me? I can’t yet read sheet music (can read some tabs), but like Josh says, a lot of them are incorrect or don’t give us info about rests/ timing and pace of song structure. I want to learn more jazz, Motown, blues, etc. Is there another course like this I can check out or another digital resource that can keep me on the bass? I have a really hard time finding a practice routine other than playing the same song/ scale over and over and over. Thanks everyone!
Alot of info in this thread.
That’s a typical situation perhaps all home schooled students experience, I know I have and still do frequently.
I play new songs I’ve not played before often, this definitely helps overall development…

+1 for the Alice’s Restaurant reference! Nice.
SBS…
Does anyone have any first hand experience with the paid lessons or know much about it?
Do you mean SBL?
If so, I signed up for Scott’s free trial, but I canceled it before seven days. The over-chatting-ness and curriculum wasn’t for me. I went directly to Talking Bass. Best decision after B2B, ever.
That’s good info, I was hoping that wasn’t the case.
The yt vids can get that way also, no disrespect as I watch most of them but the lesson vids are talkative.
I might do the trial but highly likely I’ll bail if the talking is to much.
The paid content is much less chatty FYI.
