Improv

I thought that id try a bit of module 7 improv on a few well known songs, so i googled poular songs in the key of G.
I tried half a dozen songs, on the g major scale. it was awful.
I swear i could hear my neighbours dogs howling. :grinning:

Were you just improvising in the key of G or were you following the song’s chord progression?

When the alley cats start meowing on the fence you know u got it right.
All in time…

One suggestion, instead of using a song, which has chord changes, try loading up a backing track with just one chord (no changes) and play around with that first. So if the backing track is just in C, you play around with C-E-G-B and once you get that under your fingers, start throwing in non-chord tones, but still in the key (D, F, A).

Have you gotten to where he covers the 12-bar blues progression yet? That’s where I found improv really started unlocking for me.

You want something with a simple, repeating chord pattern that you understand - like a 12-bar blues, or a simple 1-4-5-4. Then start playing around within that framework.

There are a TON of 12-bar blues backing tracks on the U-Tubers.

Also chances are those songs are in the MINOR scale, but you were playing in major.
