In memoriam

while not a musician, architect Frank Gehry died today — he is a huge hero of mine and you have seen his work even if you don’t know you have.

Wow, I had no idea he was still alive. What a legacy.

Wow, thanks for posting… I turn off news on weekends and I would have not learned of this until Monday. Gehry was an architect pushed hard, as an influence in the profession, by the professors when I was in University. Truthfully, I did not care for his style.

I believe in the theory of honest architecture as a philosophy with respect to materials and technology. I will say, in my opinion, that Gehry was in sync with my philosophy despite me not caring for him. His honesty was not only in the building and construction thereof, but also in the world of computer innovation in order to produce drawings and documentation in order build his designs. Technology allowed for it… I don’t think he could do it by pencil and paper alone. He was more than just a theoretician by the fact that he had patrons who could and would make his ideas into reality. I respect him for that.

Go! Bilbao is fantastic, and the amazing San Sebastian isn’t much of a drive. In Bilbao, stay at the Hotel Miró Bilbao. I spent weeks there back when I had to work for a living. The Guggenheim is a short walk to the right when exiting the hotel. The area with a bunch of pintxos bars (like tapas) is around the corner to the left. The junior suites are great.

I stayed in a Master Suite, but I was on an expense account.

Thanks for the link! I hadn’t heard of that book before. I checked Amazon U.S., France, German and the U.K. The U.S. site had a seller with one copy of the hardcover in Like New condition to $22. The French site had one copy for 139 €. The German site had nothing. The U.K. site had one hardcover for £80. So, of course, I bought from the U.S. seller. Shipping added $13 plus $2 VAT. When I went to pay, Amazon U.S. is linked to my Chase card. I’d forgotten that it’s also directly linked to the Chase rewards program. I had enough points and got the book for $0. Delivery is scheduled for Dec. 24th! Perfect.

Can you elaborate on that?
Reason: I just saw some documentaries about architecture experiments in Holland - from living on water (cause: rising sea level) or wooden skyscrapers to small DIY projects, where the government gives people land almost for free, so they can build whatever they want, providing they use 50% of the land to grow food.
Lots of stuff happening in my small country … and some projects were in keeping with your statement (but the opposite of Frank Gehry’s design, to be honest).

Makes me wanna go back to Holland … almost…

Very sad to hear about Raul Malo from the Mavericks passing away. I’ve been following his updates about his cancer battle and it’s heartbreaking to hear he passed. Raul had an amazing voice (Roy Orbison level voice IMHO) and his music was this mixture of genres and styles that fit together so well. Many of you know I’ve covered songs by the Mavericks in the “Post Your Covers” thread and I listen to them regularly…one of my favorite bands. We’ve lost a fantastic musician….the beauty of music is his songs will live on forever.
