As a new bassist I am always at a loss of what to play when I am looking at new instruments in the music shop.
What is your go to riffs when you are in a guitar shop and what should you definitely not play.

I would say; always play the basses, never play the 12 string acoustics.

My go-to has been scales. I get a bit nervous and forget every tune I know, so scales let me get a feel for the instrument: always the same so you can remove style from the equation and hear the tone for what it is, and play something you (should be) very familiar with.
Also, nobody is going to tell you you’re playing a major/minor scale all wrong - even tab sites get those right 100% of the time.

Ideally play something original. I’m sure the shop assistants have heard things like Seven Nation Army thousands of times.

Don’t play the guitar intro to Smoke on the Water.
