Input my Bass to my laptop…cheap?

Okay, my Amp will be here today, and my Bass will be here Tuesday. I will be doing the B2B training.

So I’d like a cheap (Sorry, but the wife is already complaining about how much I’ve spent) way to get the bass and video on my laptop to a set of headphones. I have no desire to record or use recording software at this point. I simply want to hear my bass as I play along with the videos on my laptop, though headphones.

Thanks for any help, I am using the following:

Squire Classic Vibe 70s Precision Bass, Rumble 100 Amp.

ThinkPad P51 Mobile Workstation, Intel® Core™ i7-6820HQ, Windows 10 Pro 64.

Although I’m not using it on the laptop right now, I also have a Sound Blaster X4 Hi-res 7.1 External USB DAC and Amp Sound Card with Super X-Fi. If that would help?

I am curious too.

Why do you need to get the bass and headphones to go to your lap top if you are getting an amp? Wondering if you can plug your headphones into your amp and also send the computer sounds to the amp too?

I would get a Focusrite Scarlett Solo if you really want it cheap (and good enough) … or the 2i2, if your budget allows for it!

I myself have an (expensive) Motu M4, but just got an (inexpensive) Zoom AMS-24. Advantage of the AMS-24: it is ideal for outside/mobile usage!

I’ve used a Vox Bass amPlug with headphones and PC. amPlug goes into the bass. Headphones go into the amPlug’s headphones socket. Then a speaker cable from the amPlug Aux socket to the PC/laptop headphone/speaker connection. This works OK. You just have to fiddle around with volume to get the right balance.

I see the Rumble 100 has Aux and Headphone sockets so you probably just need headphones and an Aux speaker cable. Guessing.

This is probably going to be the cheapest way to get what you’re after. I prefer using the XLR (the 3 prong line out on the back of the amp) out to Digital Interface to laptop but it requires buying another piece of equipment, and if you’re already getting heat from the boss; maybe look at that when it settles down. The Interface gives you the option to play straight into the laptop, bypassing the amp altogether.

The absolute cheapest way is probably with an instrument to USB cable like Behringer | Product | GUITAR 2 USB

Assuming it works like the much more expensive Rocksmith cable, it’ll show up as microphone input on your computer and all amplification and effects will have to be done in your recording software.

The latency is probably also not great.

Chinese knockoffs Digital Audio Interface probably starts less than $20 but you are really getting what you paid for. A decent one probably starts around $70 or so. Then a lot of reliable ones around $100-$130. Under $100 with the sales that are going on right now for Labor Day sales.

Focusrite is a reliable brand for sure.

I use the Vox Bass amp plug as well. Both my head phones and my computer go into the amp plug. Works great.

This is your best bet. Plug bass into Rumble amp. Laptop into Rumble aux input. Headphones into Rumble phones out. And you’re in business.

Thanks, HighlandBass that will be great if it works. I’ll find out tuesday.

For us new guys around here, G.A.S. is a real thing. There’s all sorts of gear on my WANT list. The Focusrite 2i2 is something you’ll eventually want for when you want to video and upload your playing. It’s my next purchase, but since I’m just starting out, I won’t be recording video anytime soon. The upside? The Holidays are only a few months out, and that means Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals!!

BTW, great choice on the P-Bass and the Rumble 100

They’re nice to have even if you aren’t recording. It’s a great solution if you just want to plug headphones in to your laptop / computer and play quietly. I’m just about to buy my first amp and it isn’t a NEED need for me. I’m just getting the itch to share my skills with the neighborhood.

Isn’t that always the case with whatever interest you have? People start with a single fishing pole and before you know it, there’s a whole fishing shed and a boat. If an activity captivates you, there’s always more to desire.

Yes you can, just get the signal from your laptop or your pc from the headphone output to the aux in on your amp, plug in your headphones in your amp and you are good to go

I’m probably going to buy the Rumble 40 as well eventually. No gigs for me so I don’t need more.

It’s good amp for the money (and for my neighbors)
Followed josh’s advice somewhere on his site, no regrets

Check out the Rumble LT25 too, if you don’t gig, it’s the same price but pretty much comes with everything you need.
