Introduce Yourself! (2018-2022)

Ha, funny, so did I, 3-4 years. I went Guitar → Melodica → Recorder → Trumpet in school. Should have stuck with Guitar

I went Viola, just to get out of classroom for a little while. i was too high energy to sit in school all day.
Then I wanted the Brass, it was just way more cool then Viola, and you got to make noises that made adults want to poop on the spot.
But my really passion back there was drums. I would do anything to get close to the drums and split duty doing Trumpet and drums, switching on songs.
Man I loved the drums.
I actually took lessons.
and My Father sold musical instruments at a music store when I was a kid, and I used to go in there and salivate on the drums.

Dad, can I sit up here. Yes, but do not hit any drums with the sticks. awe, can I do it with my fingers. OK lightly.
I would stack up on zyldjan and ride and damn, can’t remember all teh cymbal makers, but I wouls take their fliers home and the drums, and catalogs for days and I would just sit there looking thru the catalogs and point out this is what I want, how much do I have to save dad.
I dont’ know, but just keep saving and one day.

I think that Is why I am so terrible at saving these days.
All those times I was tols to just keep saving and I would get what I want, it never worked as a kid.
I sort of (regrettably ) abandoned that whole principal as an adult.
I just decided, I want what I want when I want it, so I better learn how to make alot of money, and in my career, I make really good money, when I am not out blowing it up my arm or on other dumb shit. But when I am clean, I usually manage to build a good pile of cash.
The key is to keep building, not think Hmmm, how long a party would that be. LOL

But I loved me some drums. We wuilt a bractice set with 2x4 and practice heads and kick drum to a dead foam pc and toms were pressboard with about 1/4" rubber lined it.
It was sweet, it just was not loud enough to keep my attention.

So I needed something electric. something that was not too big (like drums) so they can’t say , no, those are too big.
I needed something that you could play really low in front of them, in a box that did not lool really loud, and everything is great, until haha, crank it up.

Like my answer to not being able to have dogs at my folks house, Start a Snake breeding colony in our room above the garage.
Ane I did, and I bred quite a few snakes,

then I moved out, got a Rott, and slowly sold off the snakes.
Still like em, they are still cool pets and breeding them is satisfying, but I am a dog person all day all the way

Indeed, such a great loss :slightly_frowning_face: At least he inspired people like Monique Ortiz, who’s a real badass! Wish she’d come to the UK one day, won’t miss that gig!

Hi, my name is Howie. I’m a hobbies drummer who at the young age of 59 decided to learn bass. Even bought a Hofner ignition series because of my love for the Beatles . I found Josh on YouTube . Thought he was and is a great teacher and humorous too so I signed up for his course. I’m up to the last module of part 1 starting string crossing and ouch . Love the spoon feeding method of teaching, really helpful. I think the Ballad of John and Yoko would work great with this part off the course. Also feel good inc. What say everyone?

Hi, I’m Tam!

I’m 30.
My husband is a guitarist, and he encouraged my interest in learning bass. He helped me pick and buy an ESP LTD AP-204 just about a year ago. I took a few lessons on the Yousician app, which was fun, but I was/am borrowing a guitar amp which is fine but isn’t ideal. Then lockdown happened and I felt too embarrassed to play while he was home (which was always), as I felt he was always silently judging, or offering unsolicited tips. I got overwhelmed and frustrated quickly and stopped playing. In December 2020, due to lockdown, we invited over a mutual friend who couldn’t go home for Christmas, and they jammed together. I sang along, and had so much fun that I thought it would be even more awesome if I could play my bass to accompany their guitars. So I decided to learn bass again, and that’s when I discovered Bassbuzz!
Unfortunately, we were moving continent in January, which meant that all our furniture and instruments needed to be packed onto a ship to cross the Atlantic for 6 weeks. So I’ve just started resuming my bass lessons a few days ago and I’m having so much fun! I’m still needing to buy my own bass dedicated amp, but I think I’ll start with the Blackstar amPlug 2 Fly Bass, since I am still self conscious about how terrible I sound, and our apartment is quite small.
Other things about me - I grew up in Africa, my mom sang in a cover band, I studied animation at university, I moved to the Netherlands to be with my husband in 2018, and now we are in the US while he pursues his academia career. My other hobbies are painting, illustration, photography, reading, running and casual gaming.

Nice to meet you all!

Welcome to the community, @dravernor!
I think after completing the course and hanging out here for a bit, you’ll be easily able to return those judgemental guitarist looks.
If you need encouragement and non-judgmental help with all kinds of questions, this is the place to be!

Hi all, signed up a few days ago, on module 3. 44 years old, no musical experience outside of playing the recorder for a few months in middle school. My roommate in college had a bass and I fiddled around on it (and somehow broke the E string), haven’t picked up an instrument since then. Bought a bass less than a month ago and was learning online but I needed something with more concrete practices (handy that Josh practices along with us).

My goal is to be able to play the bass line of War Pigs as soon as is reasonable and I hope to be an active contributor in this community.

Hi @mateoloco and welcome to the forum. A bassist who hasn’t broken a string in his career is not a proper bassist! It happens to all of us  But breaking the E-string is quiet an achievement :joy: Enjoy the course and don’t worry you will be playing War Pigs soon. Best wishes - BassPlayinSeal
