Welcome @hperls. or Howard 2. (unless you prefer Howie)
Welcome @dravernor, I suppose I am welcoming you to Bass Buzz AND to the USA, so WELCOME.
welcome @mateoloco
Start with Paranoid. It is a good one to help with endurance and timing, and it is not difficult to learn, OR remember. There are 2 times that you have to do some plucking that takes a little bit to get used to (chugging an octave, so skipping a string with your plucking fingers, on 1/8 notes fast). index plucks on A string and middle plucks on G string,
its not as hard as it sounds cuz the fingers stay on the same string it is assigned to, you just pluck alternating pattern
with fretting hand, you playing a root and octave, which if you don’t know you will. very soon, it is not super hard to hold.
Other then that you just chug that song right along for a little over 3 min (or under) and that is that, you will feel accomplished and you will be cuz it is a great tool to practice with.
Then go for War Pigs.
Welcome @hperls @dravernor @mateoloco
Thanks for the advice. I know War Pigs is not the Black Sabbath song to start out on (it’s something to aspire to), although I’ve got the bass parts for the verses down (it’s only two notes [D & E] but who’s counting!). I’ve been messing around with learning some of the core parts of Iron Man (definitely not the whole song) at the moment. It sounds a lot better than it did before I started Bass Buzz but those 1/16th notes switching between Gb and G is still definitely a work in progress. I’ll check out Paranoid soon as well. About to hit the Billie Jean lesson tonight, so Black Sabbath may have to take a back seat for a bit.
Faeries wear Boots might be a good song to start with from Sabbath. Of course NIB is the penultimate bass song by them, but the opening solo would be tricky.
Sweet Leaf, Paranoid, Black Sabbath and Planet Caravan are all pretty good ones on the lower end of difficulty on bass for Sabbath songs.
I learned that. I was playing it pretty good before my health put a break in my playing. the hardest part (it is a hard song, don’t get me wrong) the hardest part is it is so damn long, memorizing it will take forever.
Cover solutions does NIB, both the cover play thru with tabs
and the bass only portion with tabs, so you can slow it down and learn it.
it still sucks with the scrolling tabs, I wish I had just a sheet to refer to, but hey, take what I can get (without getting the Black Sabbath Sheet / Tab book).
Also, it gets hard in many places in the solo to sound like him, because he plays a triplicate pattern in a way, but it is not a gallop, it is kiind of Geezer’s own style. Plus he uses a Wha pedal. I have one, but I also try just to use my envelope filter, and when set right it is close, but not the same as doing it with the pedal.
I can’t do that yet, just playing the solo is hard enough, but to do that and play the Wha pedal, when I have very little experience doing that, forget about it.
Oh, and to make things harder, he has the hammer on fill like he does in the last bar of the main verse.
E 5h7
A5h7
D5
he has that twice in his solo, but played in triplicate pattern, way faster then it does in the main verse.
When I first picked up the bass a year ago, that was one of the first riffs I learned, but I changed it up cuz I could not play it on the 5-7th fret, so I played Open A hammer B, Open D hammer E to open G.
as I got better and hands got stronger I switched it down to 5th thru 7th fret cuz thats where 90% of the solo takes place.
Hello all! I am kinda new to the bass, though I am musically inclined. My most used musical instrument is my voice. I sing in with my church praise team and was in my High School Jazz, Show, and Chamber Choirs.
High school was thirty-plus years ago. Between then and now I was in the Navy, and working in engineering. Now I want to get back into music and my church praise team needs a bass player. I dig the bass, so here I am. Not just for church, for me too. Not only for the praise team, but for the shear joy of music. Metal, Jazz, Funk, fun!!
Found B to B this last weekend and think it will be a great fit for my hectic and eclectic schedule. This forum seems a great resource and a lot of fun. At least what I have gandered so far.
Welcome @hperls. It’s nice to see more of you youngsters joining the forum.
I too have a Hofner and love it.

Welcome to the community @SarcasticBear!
Hi @SarcasticBear and welcome to the forum! Nice to have another “animal” playing the bass. Enjoy the course! Best wishes - BassPlayinSeal
Hey everybody!!
I’ve started the course very recently. I’m starting module 4 today.
As a total noob I couldn’t be more happy with the classes. I’ve taken 1 bass class 10 years ago and quit (We started with pure theory haha.) I love the combination of theory and practice in this course, and, Josh is definitely the best teacher!
Also, I’m 10 years older and more patient now I’m trying to practise at least 1 hour a day, it’s hard sometimes with work and other responsibilities, but so far I’m doing it, and to be honest this is saving my lockdown life.
My partner is playing guitar, so it’s exciting everytime we tried to play together! Actually he got me my bass (an acustic one) as a christmas gift, and I think it’s the best gift ever!!
Thanks Josh and everyone involved in this course, I hope there are intermediate and advance courses to join in the future Cheers!
Welcome aboard @maria_c,
enjoy the ride,
Cheers Brian
