I’m Emily and I live in Australia although I grew up in little old England. I am almost 40 and taught myself bass over 20 years ago but haven’t played for 17 years (til this week!). I’ve always been surrounded by amazing music (my Dad is a classical pianist and my Mum has a huge rock, reggae and folk record collection). I play piano and was also a dancer for many years so have a good grounding in rhythm and music but realised after starting this course that my bass technique was non-existent!!
As a ‘job’ (which is more of a life calling) I teach Yoga and Meditation in my small local community and online. I’m also very committed to working on social justice and environmental issues. Music and social justice have always been so connected for me. I got into human rights activism because my favourite band in 2000 was Rage Against the Machine. The rest is history and those values will always be a foundation for me!
I’m so excited to work my way through this course and to meet you all along the way.
Welcome Emily! I was similar in the long break for bass. Mine was about 25 years. I think you’ll love it around here. Great community and great course. I think you’re musical and dance background will definitely come in handy. And Rage Against the Machine brings up a lot of good memories for me.
Hi @emilyroseyoga and welcome! I’m sure you will enjoy the course; no worries! Start patiently and finish strongly (not sure about proper grammar here, I’m sorry ) Best wishes - BassPlayinSeal
Hi everyone ! I’m Leo, I’ve always really liked bass. I picked it up a few years ago when I was a young teen (17 now) but my learning progress was cut short when my bass was massacred in an incident involving fire and I could not afford to buy a new one (rest in peace to baby Cort shortscale). Finally decided to pick things up again this year and bought a bass. Watched every single one of Josh’s free lessons on YouTube, which led me to the BtoB course. Im a big classic rock fan, mainly 70s, who grew up with 80s music, and probably not very relevant here but also a big Doris Day fan. I look forward to being here !
Glad to join this great community of aspiring bass badasses. I started the course about a week ago, working thru module 3 at the moment. On top of the engaging program that Josh has put together, I have been really enjoying reading the comments for each lesson. There are a lot of good tidbits sprinkled throughout. Thanks to Josh and all the members here for making this such an interactive experience. The value in this program is fantastic. Looking forward to demystifying Billie Jean next week
A quick background on me…I’m 42 and an absolute beginner on bass. My only prior musical instrument experience was playing the coronet in grade school band, so I had a wee bit of music theory going into this program.
I hang out with a few guys who talk guitars all the time, guess I got tired of feeling left out and decided to do something about it (I’m a little different and gravitated toward the bass). Knowing my learning style and needing some structure to ensure sticking with it, I sought out training programs before allowing myself to buy a bass (best decision ever). This program stuck out, and here I am slowly but surely training my fingers to bend these strings to my will. I see a casual jam session with my guitar buddies in the not-too-distant future.
HI @Shiffypop and welcome! There is nothing mystical about Billie Jean. Have fun with it as most of us I use Billie Jean as a warmup routine until I can tick “Super Badass” on the list. Best wishes - BassPlayinSeal
