Hey everyone! I figured I should introduce myself here. I’ve always had a huge love for the bass. My favorite band of all time is the Red Hot Chili Peppers and I just fell in love with what Flea could do, so I always had an ear for the bass guitar. But I never thought about playing, anytime I tried to do anything with a normal guitar I would just fail, so I figured stringed instruments weren’t my thing.
I played sax as a kid and some piano, so I know how music works to a degree.
Well starting with the pandemic my brother in law, who is 17, started to play the guitar, just self taught. Him and my father in law would jam a lot when we would hang out.
I’ve had this old Dean bass for over 10 years and decided to just see what I could do. I started slowly figuring a few things out and really liked it, but I knew I needed lessons. I fell in love with the bass buzz youtube stuff and debated for about a week on the course. I’m pretty cheap in general so 200 bucks was a lot of money.
It was so well spent. I’ve learned so much better technique here and am loving the bass! It’s so fun to just pick up and play some notes in a groovy pattern. Still can’t just free style jam but I’m hoping that comes with more time in the course and practice.
Chili peppers are GREAT! I saw them before they were big up in Rochester while in college. I vaguely remember thinking they were going to be huge. Vaguely because i clearly remember throwing up in the middle of the venue (hey, I was in college). Haha
Man, I have been there with you – GAS is a tricky thing, though. I have a very nice guitar collection and when I started my bass journey I said, “Well, I’ll just stick to having one bass in the family… Maybe two if I like the tone and the price point is right.”
It’s 5 months later and I put $2k on the table on a pre-order last weekend. This’ll be my THIRD bass in that time frame.
In the 6 weeks or so I’ve been playing I’ve spent money on the BTB course, got a new amp and just got a new bass guitar. It’s expensive but so worth it
I did the same on Bass, Amp, and B2B class all at once.
The B2B class is awesome - Its the first internet class that I have felt is 100% worth the money.
The forums here are also really friendly, supportive and informative – Really a cool corner of the internet.
Welcome to the group @Crawlnstall
I’ve been where you are recently. I actually bought my first bass about a year ago but didn’t do anything with it…then a few months ago I bought a generic P-bass & signed up for B2B but didn’t have the time to start the lessons…then I built my first bass (a P-Bass) and started the lessons & loved it…then I bought my Steinberger ($420) & am using it for lessons now…and NOW I’m building a J-bass…I’ve got GAS! (insert metaphor).
I play sax now, and am forcing myself to learn bass clef. I was hesitant at first as I didn’t want it messing with the treble clef.
I find it not too confusing, its like what is in my hands triggers how to read the clef.
