What a cool name. I have been disabled for a couple years now, but I am getting my first knee replaced Monday morning, and after I get the 2nd knee replaced sometime after that, anywhere between 3 and 12 months they say, depending on how the first one goes and. how my recovery is.
I started Bass for therapeutic reasons, both physical and for my recovery.
I am about to turn 50, and I raised 3 wonderful daughters, and now live alone, so the big 6 figure salary is no longer mandatory for me, and I am thinking a lot more about what I WANT to do rather then what I NEED to do, and even getting a tech or tech in training at a music store or repair place, or where I live, places like Fender, G&L, Schecter, Keisel (Carvin) and many other manufacturers are not out of the question, and I can push a broom, or I can fully automate portions of their manufacturing plant (background in machining and automation), so I have been thinking a lot lately, about what I would like to do other then what I did, which was too much travel for me now a days, I am tired of airports mostly, but yeah, I can see even working at a, er, I hate to say it, er cough, Guitar Center (since they are so close) once I am able to work again, and just to get myself back on a regular schedule and back in the world of the living again.
Yeah, thats the only reason I need to work.
Well, rent, food, gas, is important too, but after that…
@Sgmbass , Welcome
@markgriffiths125 , Welcome
As am I, and Bass certainly has helped me thru many a rough spell.
You will hear that from many of us here, myself included, however, I used to want to play bass, and was stuck playing guitar… Yeah, you read that right. My best friend and I wanted to start playing music, we both fancied drums and bass, but he was able to purchase an instrument before I was able to (I mean, we had make shift drums, and some acoustic instruments to get us started, but the first to actually buy an instrument, was my friend) and he bought a bass.
Due the impracticality of drums back then (still, but electric drums are available today, so it would have been more possible for me back then to drum had that been the case), I got into playing guitar, rhythm mostly, poorly at best, but wanted to play music with my friend, and he got the bass first, so thats how it went. Oh yeah, he was a lefty who plays left handed, had he been a lefty that played right handed like Josh, then maybe I would have played more bass back then, who knows. Of course, I started really idolizing guys like Dimebag, so I took to guitar for a while, but looking back, I still mostly liked bass players, or bands with top bass players, like Primus, Anthrax, Rush, many others…
anyway, I had toyed with the idea of playing guitar again, when I made the decision to play music again, this time while in treatment, and I made the wonderful decision to turn to bass, and after choosing, I knew I made the right choice, and only wish I had played it since childhood, or at least sooner then I started (about 18 months ago, give or take a few), and I have to say, I agree with everything you are finding out about how interesting (and logical) the bass is. Glad you are crossing over and playing some bass along with your Guitar. I now think josh needs to do a Christmas themed video, where Santa @JoshFossgreen makes his debut appearance, and opens up something really cool, hint hint, maybe a gear review video or something…
Welcome Jason, glad you are here and enjoying playing bass. Did you sign up for the B2B course yet? Sounds like you did, but it is not entirely clear if you meant the course or coming to the forum? either way, both are equally excellent.
This is a perfect place to do just that. Welcome Paula.
around here, you will find that is not entirely, or even close to true, just ask @PamPurrs. She is not the only one, and there was a poll thread and it seemed the demographic had most people starting between 40 and 60 IIRC, and around here, the younger crowd would be around 35-40 I would guess. I will be 50 in a couple months myself, and started right around when I turned 48.
Hi Folks, I was reading through all the intros before making my own.
My name is Alasdair, 54, Scottish living in the NE of Scotland.
My only previous musical experience was in high school with a couple of trombone lessons after scoring high in a musical aptitude test. The trombone and I did not get along well, in fact I sucked. This is exceptionally bad when it is a brass wind instrument!
So now kids are grown up and living on their own and I no longer have to provide an unpaid taxi service there is time for me to be me again. I’m bald, bearded and big bellied so the obvious thing to do is double down on the alliteration and become a Badass Bassist. I will start the course when I get home from my current work trip, decided to start small with a Cort PJ Action bass with the reasoning that start at the low budget end and figure out what I like and don’t like before splashing some larger cash on something where I have a clue what I am talking about.
Look forward to talking to you all on the forum
Cheers
Alasdair

Welcome @Deidheid, enjoy the course!
Welcome @Deidheid . Good to have another haggis basher here. 🏴
Always enjoy a bit of haggis but can’t stand bagpipes. Only true way to appreciate bagpipes is with a flamethrower in your hand.
I’m in Oz now. Don’t reckon haggis would clear customs
@Deidheid , Welcome!
Glad you are here @Deidheid, enjoy the journey.
We all start at the beginning, will be great to see your ride.
Welcome @Deidheid !

I have had 1 set of lessons with an actual instructor about 2 years ago. He was ok but he kept throwing music theory at me and all the music theory jargon (mind you I didn’t know jack crap about music theory). It became intimidating and made me feel stupid because I didn’t get it. I could not figure out how what he was trying to teach me about music theory tied in to actually playing the bass.
Never feel stupid mate. I had that problem most of my life, then I discovered the difference between an ‘Instructor’ and a ‘Teacher’. So if your “Instructor” doesn’t know how to “Teach” it can hardly be your fault.
Fortunately for us @JoshFossgreen is very good at teaching.
Hi to all,
As my ‘nickname’ implies my name is Robb and I’m from Australia.
I’m also new to B2B. I originally tried playing piano at 14 but just could not understand the black dots, lines and squiggles on the “sheet music”. I started to believe me ever learning theory was purely theoretical. Then I discovered sheet music for drums . . . . . started playing drums at 16 but that faded out as I got married, had kids etc. Later in my 30’s tried my hand at self taught guitar (acoustic) using the tablature but as there were no tempo shown in tab it was hard but I slowly managed. In 2012 while riding my motorcycle round a slow left hand bend a small roo (grey kangaroo) decided to try a flying tackle on me. This left me with firstly very limited ability with my left shoulder, can’t lift anything over my shoulder or reach out to the end of a guitar neck, and secondly, apparently due to bleeding on the brain, could not remember how to play the guitar.
Gave the guitar to one my grandkids. Then I happened to find and watch a video of Josh giving one of his lessons and was impressed with his method of teaching. (Even I could understand it LOL) So here I am.
At the age of 68 after first attempting with a right handed bass, (that also is now in the possession of another grandkid) using a left handed bass trying to teach my right arm and hand to use the frets and my left hand to “alternate” finger pluck. (not the phrase I used on many occasion) and, thanks to Josh, actually starting to play again.

Welcome @robbaus.
Yeah, I had bleeding on the brain, and have some atrophy as a result from a TBI back in like 2014 or something, I can’t remember (lol) and short term memory can be spotty at times as a result, thats for sure
Welcome @robbaus !
G’day @robbaus
Welcome aboard @robbaus ,
Enjoy the ride,
Where are you in Oz , there are plenty of us on the forum.
I’m in Melbourne, along with @Mac
Cheers Brian
@Mac Hi there. FYI I have changed the spelling of G’DAY since starting to play bass. It’s now officially G’DAE.
