Hi gang,

I’ve been doing the course until Module 5 so far and use it as a motivation booster when I don’t want to practice. My main mission is to figure out a practice routine.

I picked bass because that’s what I listen to when I listen to music. I also always check out the bassist of any band. I started playing again two years ago and I love the way Josh breaks it down, because I used to run into walls with my playing.

Those walls are most certainly built upon the basics that I was never taught well. Like, Josh says “pull across the strings”, and the trick to fast playing is that you kind of “brush” over the string, while still not pulling upwards. I used to hook my fingertip relatively deep behind the string, and pull across. That’s really slow, I’d say 70 bpm 16ths are stellar doing it this way. Aaaanywayyyyy…

My bass is an Yamaha RBX260 from way back when (it only has a P-style pickup). It must be over 20 years old, but I still haven’t played it until the end. The story is that the guy who sold me his amp wanted to get rid of everything. His girlfriend stood next to him and said “I wish you (he) would play again.” That was when I realized bass is sexy. ^^

Then I tried to sell the bass. It never sold, too cheap! Got a setup and it’s a really, really good bass. Maybe not stellar, but it has output, playability and it’s well built.

Keep playing and have fun!

Ciao
Antonio

Hi,
I’m Eric. I live in Tokyo, Japan. I decided to start playing the bass after wanting for a long time to play an instrument well. I’ve dabbled in saxophone and trumpet but didn’t really get good at them. I’m over 40 now so I decided I’d better put some effort into playing an instrument before it gets harder. I’ve always liked listening baselines but really wanted to start playing the bass because of watching Davie504 and all the other cool bass related videos on YT. I then stumbled into this website, Talkingbass and Studybass. There is lots of information out there. This is the best time for picking up a new hobby. I will try my best to work on becoming good on the bass. Nice to meet you all.

Nice to meet you @ejwong! I’m always jealous of people who live in Japan. Can’t wait to go back there one day.
